Please, Hashem our G-d,
make us not needful
of the gifts of human hands,
nor of their loans,
but only of Your Hand
that is full, open, holy, and generous,
that we not feel inner shame
nor be humiliated
for ever and ever
- Grace after meals
Parnassa means "livelihood" in both Hebrew and in Yiddish.
According to the Rambam, Maimonides [Zeraim, Laws of Gifts for the Needy, 10:7], the highest level of charity is helping another Jew support himself (to put him on his feet) in an honorable manner.
The Parnassa group strives to help Jews around the world become self-sufficient and independent, so that they will not need the assistance of others.
