The Jewish Computing discussion group includes Jewish software reviews, information about Jewish-related computer conferences, original humor related to the Jewish use of computers, information about relevant Jewish web sites, and questions and discussions about Jewish law as applied to the use of computers.
We assume that those who come for assistance in an issue that relates to Jewish computing, will have two issues:
Jewish Computing will try to understand and share these professional experiences, issues, and problems.
You are welcome to invite your professional colleagues to join Jewish Computing.
Many issues arise when Jews use the computer. They range from basic questions about the permissibility of using a computer at all to very specific topics.
That first issue is important. Some rabbinical authorities forbid the use of the computer. Others forbid the use of the computer on certain occasions, such as intermediate days of a holiday. (There is no question about the prohibition of using the computer during the main days of the holidays). Still others forbid the use of specific aspects, such as email or word processors, unless they are required for business or for other activities.
Other issues relate to the copying of software. Civil law prohibits it, but is it considered stealing according to Jewish Law?
In addition, numerous Jewish websites keep appearing. They add to the options and possibilities for Jewish computing.
These issues and many more are discussed on Jewish Computing.
