"Thou shalt not have in thy bag diverse stones,
a great and a small.
Thou shalt not have in thy house diverse measures,
a great and a small.
A perfect and a just weight shalt thou have;
a perfect and just measure shalt thou have:
that thy days may be long
on the land which the L-rd thy G-d giveth thee.
For an abomination to the L-rd thy G-d
are all that doeth such things,
even all that doeth unrighteously."
- Deuteronomy 25:13-16
Jews have long been known as traders and businessmen. Our international business ventures were a natural result of our far-flung Diaspora.
Business practices in the general world are not necessarily identical to those in the Jewish world. Granted, Jews follow the local laws – dina demalchuta dina. However, Jews have derived a full range of business laws from the teachings of the Torah.
Anybody involved in the Jewish business world knows that clients will complain sooner or later. They will criticize something that you have or have not done.
This fact, together with other business dealings, has several aspects:
Many people instinctively deny, avoid, or hide from complaints. After all, both sides may have some justification.
You will surely want to meet with and try to satisfy the client. He may present suggestions that are less fearful than you expected. By working together, you may have created a new (and unexpected) partner.
After all, the complaining client is reaching out to you. He/she wants to be heard. This is often far better than the silent - but dissatisfied - client who just disappears.
Our Jewish Business group discusses ways in which businesses can be run according to Jewish law.
Many of our groups deal with Jewish-owned businesses, with Jewish professions, or with general professions in which Jews are involved.
However, they do not relate to the business aspects themselves.
The Jewish Business Forum relates to issues relating to business practices according to Judaism.
