What is bilingualism?

Bilingualism is fluency in two languages. Jewish Bilinguals studies fluency in the mama loschen as well as in the local language.

Mama loschen refers to Yiddish, of course. We use it to mean any mother tongue.

This mama loschen is a Jewish language, such as Hebrew, Ladino, or Yiddish, whereas the local language is likely to be a non-Jewish language, such as English, Spanish, French, or Russian.

It can work the other way, as well. The mama loschen might not be a Jewish language, but the acquired language may be Jewish. Either way, the child will be raised with two languages.
