SIDS is the #1 cause of death for children between the ages of one week and one year. It kill more children each year than Cancer, Leukemia, Heart Disease,Cystic Fibrosis, & Child Abuse COMBINED!! At least 4000 babies die in the United Stated each year from SIDS. Which means a babie dies somewhere in the United States every 2 hours.
SIDS deaths peak between 2 months & 4 months, but can occur any time between birth and one year.
SIDS occurs most often in winter months, and 80% of the babies have a slight cold at the time.
Boys are 50% more likely to die of SIDS than girls. African American babies have twice the SIDS rate as Caucasians
SIDS cannot be predicted, and it cannot be prevented. SIDS victims are perfectly healthy children who die for no medical reason.
Premature babies, babies with low birth weight, and babies born to women who smoke during pregnancy are at a higher risk of dying of SIDS.
Babies who sleep in the prone position (on stomach), babies who are overheated, and babies exposed to cigarette smoke also have higher SIDS death rates.
