| Profiting From Trials - Part 2 | ||||||||||||||||
| James 1:5-8 | ||||||||||||||||
| 5: If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. The wisdom we receive from the Lord guides us in seeing what we need to learn from our trials and how we can apply those lessons to our lives. God's wisdom will not only reveal those areas that we need to strengthen, but teach us how to treat others, regardless of the circumstances. If one is learning true wisdom from their trials, then we should notice a difference in our responses and way of thinking from trial to trial. God-given wisdom directs us to stop and evaluate our situation to determine the best response. We can go boldly before the throne of God as ask for His wisdom. Christ said in Matthew 7:7, "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you." 6: But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the win. The word doubting means "to be divided in one's mind" or to "debate." This refers to a continued uncertainty, not the occasional moment of doubt. One is divided in his thinking, therefore in faith in Christ; often walking in a feeling of spiritual defeat. Satan plants doubt; he is all about deception, confusion which may cause doubt if you are spirtually weak.. Maybe your doubting stems from being more concerned of what the flesh wants, rather than asking for those things that God knows is best for you. Let's look at James 3:16, For where envy and self-seeking exisit, confusion and every evil thing are there. 1 Corinthians 14:33, For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints. 7-8: For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. The reference here to the term double-minded has a literal meaning of "two souls." This causes division within ourselves, dividing us between God and the world, therefore, no inner peace will ever be found. What faith there may have been, will be shaken or disappear all together. We cannot be divided between Christ and the world Matthew 6:24 quotes Christ warning us of this very thing, "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon." James 4:3, Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Proverbs 2:3-8, Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And life up your voice for understanding, If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly; He guards the paths of justice, And preserves the way of His saints. We can receive wisdom in two ways: it is a gift from God, and we can seek it out. We can pray the Holy Spirit guide us and give us wisdom. We need to search for it, as it is hidden from those who find the message of the cross, foolish. Wisdom begins with the Word of God. We have His written Word, the Bible, which instructs us on how to handle every possible situation we may find ourselves in. God reveals His wisdom to the godly...those who are sincere in receiving it. When we cry out to Him for wisdom and practice "true" wisdom by actually applying it to our lives, then we are considered righteous or "upright". And we see that God is a shield to the upright and the sincere of heart. That shield, along with His wisdom, will get us through any trial and bring us that much closer to Him. Jesus warned in the book of Matthew, about throwing our pearls (of wisdom) to the swine. How must God feel when we have "two souls", asking for His wisdom which we will never use? Wisdom is only effective if it is applied. |
