| 38"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth of a tooth.' 39But I tell you not to resist and evil person. But whoever slaps you on the right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. 41And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. 42Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away." Christ hits four main areas in this passage alone: 1) physical attacks, 2) legal suits, 3) government demands, 4) financial requests. (Taken from the NKJV Study Bible notes). "Compels" refers to the law of forced service. The Roman government could compel or press one to carry a load as far as a mile. Christ Himself displayed an attitude of non-retaliation that He commands of us in this passage. We see this in Isaiah 50:6, "I gave My back to those who struck Me, And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting." We need not seek vengeance for ourselves according to Romans 12:19. That is God's job. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, "Vegeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. We should be willing to part with material things, as they have no place in heaven. If we are concerned with such things to the point that we would consider fighting for them, it would be a good idea to do a spiritual check-up on ourselves. We should always do more than what is expected of us. To be truly Christ-like we should help all who are in need, and the Father will reward us. |
