| EDCE 201: Career and Life Planning Cultural Awareness Activity ____________________________________________________________________________________________ For this activity you are asked to pick the type of multicultural experience that will give you the most potential for personal growth. Everyone's experience will be different! For example, you might attend a service in a church that is radically different from your own, spend part of a day in a wheel chair, visit a gay bar, volunteer at a homeless shelter or nursing home, and/or spend an evening with a family of a different cultural background. The important thing is to share some of yourself with others, while being aware of how YOU feel being the different one. Consider how being different can affect and contribute to relationships in the work environment. You should complete a 3-5 page summary of your experience that addresses the following: 1) A summary of the experience. 2) What you learned about the culture/minority population. 3) What personal biases/issues you have (had) about this culture/minority population. 4) How your personal biases/issues could affect your interactions with members of this culture. 5) How being a member of the culture/minority population could affect and contribute to the work environment. Please write a brief description of what experience you would like to do and why you have chosen this experience for your instructor's approval on or before February 8, 2002. |
