August 2001 Vacation
On August 2nd we spent the day at Ledges State Park near Boone, Iowa
We left the boys with Grandma and took off for Colorado.

 

 

We picked up my old Bell Labs buddy from Chicago, Gerry at the Denver airport.
The next morning we drove to Colorado Springs where we left Monica with Aunt Mille.



 

 

Gerry and I set off at the base of Pike's Peak ( 6600 Feet ) and hiked to Barr Camp where we spent the night in a tent.

There was a heavy thunderstorm which rolled in about 9:00. It was perfectly timed as it quieted down the yahoos camped nearby.
We set out at 8:00 the next morning and arrived at the summit by 1:00

We returned to Denver where Monica helped nephews Eli and Ethan exercise the pet rats.
We drove Gerry to the Denver airport on Monday morning ( I don't know why he wanted to go back to work! ).
Monica and I set out for Mount Evans ( another 14,000 foot mountain you can drive up ). This time we drove up.
Looks just like Switzerland.
We spent 2 nights at the YMCA of the Rockies which is right next to Rocky Mountain National Park.
We had the chance to encounter a bear close up just outside our hotel room. He was an old blind bear looking for a snack in the trash cans.
We hiked into the park for some beautiful scenery.
It was a good thing it was pouring rain on the morning we were scheduled to leave or we would still be there!
On the road back to Iowa I had a prearranged meeting with one of my old college roomates who I hadn't seen in 20 years.
Al was a great roommate but when you live with 4 other guys in a tiny apartment for a couple of years it takes 20 years to get over that.
Arriving back in Iowa we set out for the Iowa State Fair.
Elliot flipped over the midway.
Eric now wants a trampoline for his birthday.

This is how Monica wants us to sleep.
Sometimes just anything will do for a pillow.
Elliot was "bored" with the animal exhibits, he thought they smelled bad too.
The weekend was spent at Grandmas house.

We attended church in St. Patricks, a beautiful old church.
We had lunch with old friends before boarding our plane for home.
