For Baby's Sake
By Michelle Gay and Andrea Wyllie

Children approach the world around them with a natural curiosity and sense of excitement that is a constant marvel to us. As caregivers, we want to help the children in our care explore their environment in a safe and healthy way. Unfortunately, little fingers often find themselves in big situations. Here are just a few tips that will make your home safer...

  1. Turn the temperature on your hot water tank down to 120 degrees celcius to reduce the risk of serious scald injury to the children in your care. You can test the water temperature by letting the hot water run for 2 minutes, filling a mug with hot water and then using a meat or candy thermometer to test the temperature. Be sure to watch the thermometer carefully to catch the temperature at its highest, as the water in the mug will cool quickly. To get an accurate reading, wait one hour after any significant use of hot water.
  2. Use only a fitted sheet and a light blanket in the crib of a child under one year of age to reduce the risk of SIDS. Comforters, stuffed toys, pillows and bumper pads should never be placed in an infant's crib.
  3. Install the anti-tip bracket for your oven. It is a small horseshoe shaped device that allows your oven to be bolted to the floor. It prevents your oven from tipping when the door is opened and a child pushes or stands on the oven door. If you do not have the device that came with your oven, you can purchase a replacement by contacting the manufacturer.
