Movie biz hoppin' with pop stars
Britney Spears, a former Mousketeer, is at the center of an aggressive drive into the movie business by a handful of young pop stars molded by the music industry and MTV.

Not since the 1960s, when singers like Elvis Presley, Frankie Avalon, Fabian and Johnny Cash crooned their way onto movie screens, have studios produced as many star vehicles to showcase the hip-shimmying musical talents of the day's teen idols.

Their holy grail is ``The Bodyguard,'' starring Whitney Houston, which grossed $122 million and relaunched a pop song that became a perennial hit. The soundtrack is one of the best selling of all time.

That's why there was much gyrating going on in the corridors of ICM Monday after its film agents signed Spears. The curvy 19-year-old now appears ready to make a full-out attempt at movie stardom she hopes will begin on Feb. 15, when Paramount and MTV Films release the Tamra Davis-directed ``Crossroads,'' a film financed by her record company.

Spears has hardly gone unnoticed by Hollywood, and has recently been up for several high-profile parts to help that transition.

She is set to play herself in a small scene opposite Mike Myers in ``Austin Powers in Goldmember,'' and she has been vigorously courted by Harvey Weinstein for a small but showy role in Miramax's screen adaptation of the Bob Fosse musical ``Chicago.'' While Spears is currently concentrating on promoting her latest disc, an untitled screen vehicle is on the drawing board with writer James V. Hart.

But as any MTV suit knows, not all recording stars play well in two dimensions. And though studios may view these projects as a means to capitalize on the booming soundtrack business, they can't count on music revenues to hedge their bets if the films don't perform.

Film and music licensing rights often are held by rival companies, and synergy between the two industries is tenuous at best. Realizing a profit can be tricky for the agencies, too -- Endeavour formerly represented Spears for film -- given the labyrinthian nature of packaging a crossover project.

Eminem, whose ``Untitled Detroit Project'' will be released by Universal next year, is signed to Interscope, a division of Universal Music Group. His film will have an Interscope soundtrack.

But ``Crossroads'' won't have a soundtrack at all (three of the film's songs appear on Spears' new album, ``Britney,'' from Jive, a division of BMG).

The box office reports are full of pop vehicles that misfired. This fall saw the disappointing film outings of Mariah Carey in Fox's ``Glitter'' and members of 'N Sync in Miramax's ``On the Line.''

Nevertheless, Paramount has high hopes for ``Crossroads'' and Universal is predicting its Eminem film, an Imagine co-production directed by Curtis Hanson, will be a critical and commercial success.

Although ``Bones,'' the recent Snoop Dogg horror flick, and ``The Wash,'' with Dogg and Dr. Dre, recently opened to dismal results, ``Exit Wounds'' made a movie star out of DMX.

And Universal and Jersey Films hope the same will be true of Redman and Method Man, who star in ``How High,'' out next month.

These performers have created a cheap labor force for the Hollywood star system as it strains to meet the public's ever widening demand for instant celebs.

``There are more movies than brand-name actors,'' said Jersey co-chair Michael Shamberg. ``That's what these actors are, brands.''

Like their '60s counterparts, they're also manufactured entities. Even artists with ``street cred,'' such as Eminem and Snoop Dogg, have created a brand or persona through MTV and the hype machine of the music labels.

Many of the new crop of films, like the teen romps of a generation ago, are cheap and safe for a family audience. Pop star salaries are lower than A-list actors', and the 'N Sync, Britney and Mariah films reportedly each cost less than $10 million, an amount the studios are likely to earn back through TV, home video and airplane licensing fees, if not at the box office.

But the sort of exploitation filmmaking that generated huge revenues for Elvis' producers from films such as ``Blue Hawaii'' and ``Roustabout'' no longer plays in theaters. Today's fickle teens are quick to smell a cynical marketing ploy.

Steven Beer, an indie film veteran and attorney for Spears, O-Town (which was itself assembled over the course of the ABC reality series ``Making the Band'') and Aaron Carter, said executives ignore the fundamentals of script and character at their peril.

``Too often agents, managers and artists think there are shortcuts to making great cinematic entertainment,'' Beer said.

``Crossroads'' producer Ann Carli says a movie that rests entirely on a pop star's untested shoulders is a dicey proposition. Spears worked with an ensemble cast on ``Crossroads,'' and director Davis kept a writer on the set for emergency rewrites.

Excised from Spears' script were improbable lines like, ``What's so great about being me?''

These days, pop music trends are arguably even more ephemeral than in the era of crossover stars like Elvis and Frank Sinatra. A year of production delays can doom a studio to release a star vehicle driven by a fading name.

Take ``Glitter,'' a film dreamed up as a synergistic product for Columbia Records and the motion picture group. After the studio's interest in the project dimmed and it sold domestic distribution rights to Fox, Carey left the label to ink an $80 million deal with Virgin records, taking the ``Glitter'' soundtrack with her. Delayed by the singer's emotional and physical breakdown last summer, the record, and the film, bombed.

At a time of soaring marketing costs, the most a studio can ask is not just that the pop star toplining a film will give it an opening-weekend push, but that the movie itself will have legs to carry it beyond the original buzz.

That's Universal and Imagine's expectation for their Eminem project. By attaching Oscar-nominated ''Wonder Boys'' director Hanson, they hoped to create something that defied formula and might have a life of its own outside the notoriety of Eminem's name.

``It could have been designed exploitatively, but it was not executed that way,'' said Universal Pictures co-chair Stacey Snider. ``It came in like 'Rebel Without a Cause.'''

Good Morning America
This is a summary for the O-Town latest appearance, Good Morning America, and thanks to Evie and Jenn from In The House With O-Town for this news:

"Around 8:30 am they showed about a minute long clip of the guys performing to the crowd. They were singing "Girl". About ten minutes later they sang "We Fit Together" - the full length with Jacob playing guitar. They were all wearing jeans, except for Trevor who had on baggy gray pants. Jacob was wearing a tan leather coat over a plain white shirt, Ashley had on a black tee shirt (I think it was Triple 5 Soul) and a blue zip up sweatshirt over top. Dan and Erik-Michael both had on military-ish shirts over their tees. Erik's was wearing a black turtleneck under and Dan had on a cute Curious George tee. Trevor had on a big black Enyce turtleneck. At around 8:40 they had a small interview with the hosts. They talked about MTB3, the music business and how blessed they are. After the commercials, they sang "All Or Nothing"."

Guess Who's Coming To Dinner? O-Town
Before your family dishes out the big bird and all its trimmings this Thanksgiving, many artists will be serving up some musical munchies on television to whet your appetite. And be sure to save room for dessert after the sun goes down, since late-night programs also have some sweet sounds lined up.

Pop, R&B and country are on the menu for the 75th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, with performances by O-Town, Boys II Men, Joey McIntyre and Usher slated to take place atop floats cruising down Central Park West and Broadway in midtown Manhattan, according to a Macy's spokesperson. Tony Bennett, Charlotte Church, Billy Gilman, Kenny G, Jon Secada and LMNT (three O-Town finalists that didn't make the cut) round out the musical lineup for the event, which will be broadcast live on NBC from 9 a.m. to noon.

Country is the predominant genre of CBS's "All-American Thanksgiving Parade," a compilation of highlights from the Macy's parade as well as holiday marches in Nashville and Detroit. Lee Ann Womack and Ray Stevens lead the musical charge in Nashville, while Lee Greenwood tops the roster in Detroit, according to a CBS spokesperson. The special, airing from 9 a.m. to noon, will also visit Nashville's Grand Ole Opry House for performances by Vince Gill and Brad Paisley.

After the parades, Enrique Iglesias will be among the halftime entertainment at the Detroit Lions-Green Bay Packers game, which begins at 12:30 p.m. ET The late game, the Dallas Cowboys versus the Denver Broncos, will feature Creed as its halftime fanfare.

If you're still awake after the turkey's sleep-inducing amino acid L-tryptophan takes effect, you can catch U2 on a live broadcast of NBC's "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" at 11:35 p.m. ET, according to a network spokesperson. The program will be broadcast to U.S. servicemen and women stationed in 175 countries and aboard 150 Navy ships via the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service.

U2 will also be the subject of a CNN profile during the cable channel's "People in the News" program, which is scheduled to air at 9:30 a.m. ET.

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger will provide lip service to the "Good Morning America" crew on ABC at 7 a.m., more than a half-day away from "Being Mick," a one-hour special on the classic rocker that airs on the same network at 10 p.m. and features interviews with Wyclef Jean, Elton John, Lenny Kravitz, Pete Townshend, U2 and the Who, an ABC spokesperson said.

Later in evening, Ben Folds will appear on NBC's "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" at 12:35 a.m., while Leona Naess visits "The Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn" at 12:37 a.m.

A "Happy Bird Day" Begins With Parade and O-Town
Lady Liberty has plucked Tom Turkey from the top spot in the 75th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and, for the first time, children of city cops and firefighters will lead marchers down Broadway tomorrow.

The Statue of Liberty float, which will be adorned with the flags of all 50 states, was chosen over the traditional gobbler as a tribute to the victims and heroes of the World Trade Center disaster.

The NYPD and FDNY kids were given a prominent spot at the head of the parade to thank the city's Bravest and Finest for their heroism after the Sept. 11 attacks.

"We were looking for a different way to salute these city workers, and we thought this would be a wonderful since the parade is really a celebration for children," said Macy's spokeswoman Ronnie Taffet.

While this year's parade will be heavy on patriotism and flag-waving, organizers promised there also will be plenty of fun for the huddling masses lining the route — and a fabulous flotilla of huge balloons.

"For 75 years, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has brought the country together," said Robin Hall, who is directing the festivities for the first time. "The parade remains a symbol of continuity and stability. In light of recent events, this is an especially significant year for the parade."

Mayor Giuliani said the city has been on heightened alert since the twin towers attacks, so there is no need for extra security along the 21/2-mile parade route.

A high-ranking police source said 1,700 cops would patrol the parade, a slight increase from last year. The extra officers are needed because of new traffic restrictions, the source said.

There will also be cops — plus firefighters, Emergency Medical Service workers and Port Authority cops — riding the floats. On one, uniformed officers will hold gigantic banners depicting American flags and the silhouettes of the towers.

Giuliani, who skipped the parade last year while undergoing radiation treatments for prostate cancer, will march tomorrow.

The parade will start, as always, at 9 a.m. at 77th St. and Central Park West and wind down Broadway to Herald Square.

An estimated 50 million viewers will watch the broadcast of the parade on NBC/Channel 4. The "Today" show's Katie Couric, Matt Lauer and Al Roker will anchor the coverage. The parade will also be shown live on cable station New York 1.

This year, five new giant helium balloons will join the 10 floating faves. And if parents don't immediately recognize them, the kids certainly will cheer as Curious George, a revamped Big Bird, Pikachu, Jimmy Neutron from Nickelodeon fame and the Cheesasaurus Rex from the Kraft macaroni and cheese box float by.

For the old-timers, this year's parade marks the return of classic balloons like the Elf and Harold the Fireman, along with the Hippopotamus and Toy Soldier.

Plus, all the favorite floats — Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and, of course, Santa — will be there.

The roster of entertainers has something for every generation and just about every taste. The performers include Tony Bennett, Boyz II Men, Usher, Billy Gilman, O-Town and soprano Charlotte Church.

Miss Universe, Denise Quinones August of Puerto Rico, will be there, and singing cop Daniel Rodriguez will perform "The Star Spangled Banner" from the Daily News' Big Apple Float.

Workers will blow up the balloons today beginning at 3 p.m. near the American Museum of Natural History. But Transportation Department engineer Henry Perahia won't decide until the last minute whether the big ones will fly.

The National Weather Service forecasts sunny skies and a high of 50 degrees tomorrow. But it's the wind speeds that Perahia was most concerned about.

"If winds gust from 11 mph to 15 mph, the force on the balloon doubles, making it twice as heavy to hold," he said.

The city required that the big balloons be grounded if winds reached 23 mph and gusts hit 34 mph after a Manhattan woman was nearly killed in 1997, when a wayward balloon knocked a lamppost on her head.

Parade Tips

The 75th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade kicks off tomorrow at 9 a.m. at 77th St. and Central Park West. It will be broadcast on Channel 4 and New York 1 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The parade heads south down Central Park West to Columbus Circle, continues down Broadway and ends 21/2 miles later at Herald Square around noon.

O-Town & LFO To Open For Britney Spears
LFO has announced that it will open for Britney Spears on select December dates of her Britney 2001 U.S. tour, including December 11 at the FleetCenter in Boston; December 14 at the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina; December 15 at Philips Arena in Atlanta; and December 16 at the New Orleans Arena. O-Town is opening Spears's current concerts.

LAUNCH spoke to LFO singer Rich Cronin recently, and he said that LFO feels very comfortable with its new record label, J Records, a private joint venture between Clive Davis and BMG Entertainment. "It feels good. Like Brad always says, 'It's very much like being at Arista,' because a lot of the same people we dealt with at Arista are there, but at the same time it's different because it's cool to be in something from the ground floor, and it's very interesting to be with Clive Davis on the ground floor of his new venture."

Cronin added that LFO was one of a handful of artists that Davis, the current chairman/CEO of J Records, was allowed to take with him when he parted ways with Arista. "He got to pick three artists from Arista that he would bring to his new company, and he chose us as one of them. And J Records is a very classy act, I think," he said. "It's a very classy outfit."

In related news, Cronin was in Los Angeles last week to tape an episode of the new WB show Raising Dad, which stars Bob Saget and newcomer Kat Dennings.

LFO will be in Los Angeles on December 21 and 22 to shoot the music video for the title track from its latest album, Life Is Good. In addition, LFO will join Pink and several other artists in performing on the Dick Clark New Year's Rockin' Eve telecast, which tapes in Los Angeles on December 9 airs on December 31.

O-Town Set For Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
O-Town will take a break from it's supporting role on Britney Spears' current U.S. tour to perform at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City on Thursday (November 22). Tony Bennett, Billy Gilman, Jon Secada, and many other music stars will join O-Town in celebrating the 75th anniversary of the parade this year.

Singer Trevor Penick told LAUNCH that O-Town is already working on its sophomore album, and expects to tour overseas early next year. "We're going to go over to Germany and the U.K. and do a little short tour over there, probably in January. Right now we're writing for the next album," he said. "We're currently doing songs and putting demos together to get ready to show Clive (Davis), and the next album's going to be coming out either late spring or early summer next year."

More Info About O-Town DVD / VHS
Synopsis:
A combination of SURVIVOR and the Backstreet Boys, the pop quintet O-Town sprang from a television show which capitalized on the success of both reality tv programs and the incredible success of teenage boy bands. The five heartthrobs have achieved chart-topping success with some bubblegum pop gems such as "Liquid Dreams" and "All or Nothing." This concert, filmed in front of an enthusiastic audience at New York's ornate Hammerstein Ballroom, includes performances of 12 of O-Town's best tunes.

New O-Town Show On MTV
MTV will be going to air a new O-Town called "Making The Band Special", and MTV will play at November 22 and 23. So don't miss it, for the time please check out the Calendar, which you may go through the left menu.

O-Town's New Single A Perfect 'Fit'
O-Town's latest single, "We Fit Together," was a natural follow-up to the last single, the ballad "All Or Nothing," according to groupmembers Dan Miller and Trevor Penick. "'All Or Nothing' was kind of an oxymoron--a slow, break-up love song," Miller explained to LAUNCH.

Miller and Penick also told LAUNCH that O-Town wanted to follow "All Or Nothing" with a fun, up-tempo track, and the group decided that "We Fit Together" was a perfect fit for the new single. The singers added that it was also a lot of fun shooting the music video for the song on a boat filled with beautiful women.

"In 'We Fit Together,' we just wanted to get something a little more upbeat and a little bit more R&B, and we got to do that," Miller said. "So we did the upbeat R&B thing and it's on a boat, and we're just having fun with about 50 beautiful women."

Penick added, "That's right, and there's one in particular..."

Miller continued, "Yeah, there is one that we've grown a little more attracted to then the others, but it's just kind of fun...and fun."

The third season of O-Town's reality-television show, Making The Band, will begin airing January 4 on MTV. Tonight (November 9) Britney Spears and O-Town perform at the Gund Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

O-Town On TRL Yesterday
O-Town was on Total Request Live with Carson yesterday. And because Carson needed to go to watch Michael Jackson on stage (where near to the TRL studio) so he let O-Town take over the TRL for about the first 30-40 minutes and let them countdown from No.9 to No.7. After that, Carson was back and host the TRL again with Michael Jackson interview. A while later, when after the commercial break, O-Town performed "We Fit Together", and they give out their albums to the fan in the studio.

O-Town TRL Review
(Thanks to Evie and Jenn from In The House With O-Town gave us this information about the TRL yesterday)

"Here's what we've heard about O-Town on TRL (11/07) if you missed it : They performed We Fit Together and then All Or Nothing at the end. Jake was wearing a cute shirt that said "Same shirt, different day", Ashley was wearing his usual jean jacket, and Trevor's hair looked good and kinda spikey. Thanks to Kelly for the info."

O-Town: The Perfect Fit
If the sun always shines on TV (as A-Ha once proclaimed), the telegenic men of O-Town are enjoying an endless summer.

Following their birth on the weekly series "Making the Band," the fivesome — Ashley Parker Angel, Erik-Michael Estrada, Dan Miller, Trevor Penick and Jacob Underwood — perplexed naysayers and beat Vegas odds when their first LP debuted at #5 on the Billboard 200. In good company at Clive Davis' J Records house of hits (alongside labelmates such as Alicia Keys) the guys have, among other things, a tour with Britney Spears and a third season of "Making the Band" to keep them looking on the bright side this fall.

O-Town's Ashley (blond, Leo) and Jacob (auburn, Taurus) talked to Curtis Waller about what's in store on the small screen, their plans for their second album and why their fans are the best a band could ever ask for.

MTV: Looking back at how you got started on "Making the Band," did you think you would be having this kind of success?

Ashley Parker Angel: Man, when we think back about when we first embarked on this journey, I guess you would say it's kinda funny, 'cause we had a lot in our favor. The ball was in our court, 'cause we had a TV show, but there were a lot of different battles we had to fight. Fortunately, I think, we've been able to turn some heads because of Clive Davis and because of the songs that have been on the radio that have done well. Honestly, we owe it to our faithful, loyal fans who have been there from the very beginning. We owe it to Clive Davis, because when he came in, he brought a level of respect to the group and credibility. Things are rolling.

MTV: Since you started off on TV and have put out an album, are you guys thinking about venturing off into film, either as a group as individuals?

Ashley: All of us in the group have things that we would like to do at some point. As a group, we're focused on music right now. We're focused on touring right now. We're not really focused on any other avenues of entertainment like film or anything like that, 'cause right now we're filming a third season of the television show, so we've got that to worry about. We want to show hopefully a different side of things that people haven't seen in the first two seasons. That's going to take up a lot of our time, and we've got the Britney Spears tour. Down the road there'll probably be things that different ones of us will experiment with, but for right now all of our focus is on the group.

MTV: You released your album in January, and with "We Fit Together" getting a good reception right now, do you think there's another single left in the album?

Jacob Underwood: Yeah, we feel strongly about songs like "Love Should Be a Crime" and "Girl," but we're gonna wait and see how "We Fit Together" is doing. It's still on its up-climb. We started writing for the second album, and that's in our sights now. We're going to try to start writing and recording while we're out with Britney.

MTV: Do you guys have a studio that you take along with you, or do you see yourself doing recording in different towns while you travel?

Jacob: We actually write a lot when we're on the road. Fortunately Britney doesn't do seven shows a week like we were doing, so we have some time in the week to maybe track down a studio and go in and demo some stuff. We just had a little break a little while ago, and we wrote a bunch of songs on the road individually. We go in studios and we try to lay as many as we can down.

Ashley: It's hard to tell, with the stuff we've been coming up with, what will absolutely be on the next album. I think we all have our favorites, and it's still early. We haven't even sat down [and] heard the songs that the others are writing. It'll be difficult because Clive Davis, he's the hitmaker. He's the hit man. He's made it clear: If it's not a hit song, it really, really isn't gonna make the album. So we've been really stretching our writing muscles and growing as writers to try to express what's inside of us so that the fans can get more of a direct relationship with the music, 'cause they know it's coming from us. That's something we want to pride ourselves in. We've been really working hard at it. Hopefully a lot of the stuff we're writing will make the album.

MTV: Can you give us any clues as to what's in store on the new season of "Making the Band"? Do any of you guys get in the director's chair or anything like that?

Jacob: Since the first season, it was pretty much that "Real World" scenario where they just put you in the house, you have no say, you just get followed. So now that we've been doing it for a while, they're definitely giving us more control over when we're getting shot. It's more of us opening up and showing the fans who we are. It can only be to our advantage when we're being real. We like those moments when the camera is just there, and they've caught us writing music, actually sitting down and writing and trying to be creative while the camera is there, and then recording and having conversations with Clive about the album. It's gonna be very real. Now that we're on MTV, we have the opportunity to show a little bit more about who we are in our third season.

MTV: You really do have some dedicated and loyal fans. To what do you credit that devotion?

Ashley: It's because of Clive Davis and the songs that we've had out on the radio and the relationship that we've been able to build with the fans because of "Making the Band." That's really been such an in with us to show the public and to show people from a wide variety of ages who we really are, immediately. It's not like you're reading a magazine article. It's more than just seeing someone in concert. It's a series about your personal life. I think a lot of the fans connected with us from the very beginning, and that's the reason why. It just seems like there's these legions of fans that had to stay loyal to us from the very beginning, and it's growing.

Jacob: I think every artist out there loves their fans, and they have fans for different reasons. A lot of fans just have that connection with artists where they listen to their music and they come to their shows 'cause they appreciate their music and their music moves them. You can't help but love it. But our fans are there for a whole new reason. They've watched the show. They feel personally connected. Some fans come and they're like, "Yeah, I've been watching you guys on TV for so long, I wanted to come and see you in concert." They bought the record 'cause they watched us, and they really feel like they know us. It's a different connection.

I don't think any band's been this exposed this quickly and to more than just their music and what they listen to and what they write. It's our personal lives. You've met our mothers. You've met our families and our girlfriends on TV. And the fans are still there, sleeping in the streets to get into our shows, and you cannot help but applaud that dedication to a band. We really appreciate it. The only reason why we're still around is because of them. They requested our music when critics and people wanted it to go away. They were still there requesting it, regardless, and it just goes to show you make it because of the fans.

MTV: Is there anything you want to say to your fans directly?

Jacob: Well, I want to say that we really have given a lot of ourselves to them through the show, and the only thing that we hope is that they get a lot out of it, that they learn from it. That they take our experiences and realize we're just like them. We're them at home wishing to be where they see everybody on TV. I was sitting at home watching Michael Jackson videos saying, "I wanna be like him. I wanna be dancing onstage" and all this. They've kinda seen us before, when we were in that position. I just want to say thank you to them for sticking around and watching us and sharing our lives, and I hope they stick around and continue.

Britney Spears's Tour featuring O-Town
Britney Spears' Britney 2001 tour kicks off tonight (November 1) at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, with special guests O-Town. Spears pushed back the tour opener one day due to production delays.

Spears told LAUNCH that she loved the large-scale production on *NSYNC's recent PopOdyssey tour and Janet Jackson's All For You world tour 2001, but that she won't be borrowing any ideas from either of them. "As far as the PopOdyssey tour, that show is definitely an inspiration for this, for this tour that I’m doing, as well as Janet's tour, but I'm not going to...I'm not doing anything similar to their show at all, actually," she said.

Spears added that she hopes her fans use the Britney tour as an escape from all of the recent tragic events in the world. "The main thing is I just would like for people to leave just being inspired, and just to make them forget about the day and who they are and everything going on in the world, and just have a good time," she added.

Spears will donate $1 from each concert ticket sold to help the children of the New York City police and firefighters.
