| A Romanian St. Valentine | |||||||||||||||
| A week after St. Valentine's day, that is, on the 24th of February, the Romanians celebrate love and its protector, Dragobete. "Drag" means "dear" or "darling". As the legend has it, Dragobete was the son of Baba Dochia, the old woman who keeps winter until spring is stronger and takes its place. Dragobete was young and handsome and wherever he appeared love was in the air: boys ran after girls on the fields and hills, picking snowdrops for their beloved, the buds shook the snow that kept them in slumber and the birds started building their nests. Magic charms used to be enchanted seven times to get the boys or girls fall in love with the chosen one. One of those charms says: "As long as slippers face down stay You will not sleep and stay awake! Rolling and twisting, Of ME only thinking, ( Lover's name)!" |
