Fashionable periodicals of the late 1800's commented regularly on the social goings-on at the Pier. The New York Times reported in 1877 that Narragansett was "an American watering place in the truest sense of the term."

Most prominent among the attractions of the Pier was the Casino. Unique in its architecture, it combined the best aspects of a private club and a central gathering place.
