The parallel pair of stone arches which survived the blaze were designed by the famous New York Architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White, and represent a powerful image of a bygone era.The success of the firm was due to the complementary nature of the three partners- McKim the idealist, Mead the pragmatist, and White the sensualist.
