Game Summary

Lowell - The Cubs surged past .500 for the first time in the Thomas regime as they beat the Yankees 12-2 at Shedd Park.

Marvin Ritchie starting things off right for the Cubs leading off the game with homerun.  The Cubs plated another run as Chuck Trafton scored on a Duffy Thomas RBI single.

Jason LeFebrve helped preserve the lead in the bottom of the inning as he made a sliding catch in LF and doubled a runner off of second.

Starting pitcher Tom Knox (1-1) traded zeroes with Yankees until the Cubs struck for three runs in the fourth on a Thomas 3-run homerun.

The Yankees nicked Knox for score in the fifth to bring the score to 5-1.  The Cubs exploded for three more runs in the seventh as Steve Johanson drove Trafton in, Knox scored Johanson and Jerry Kohl drove Knox in.

With the Cubs up 8-1, the Yankees scored their last run in the seventh before Thomas shut the door.

The Cubs scored three in the ninth to finish the scoring. Mark Hamel led off with a long homerun down the right field line and Johanson drove in two more with a single.

On the day, the first six Cubs hitters combined to go 15-24 with two homeruns, 3 doubles and 10 RBI.  Ritchie had three hits and three runs; Trafton three hits and four runs; Johanson three hits and three RBI; Thomas 2 hits and four RBI; Knox and Kohl had two hits and two RBIs apiece.

Scott Van Winkle made several nice pays while playing all over the field including 2B, 3B, LF and CF.  The Cubs overall played great defense.

The Cubs play the first place Phillies next Sunday at Greater Lowell Tech. Chuck Trafton will start for the Cubs in what should be great game as the Phillies will be looking to avenge their playoff loss to the Cubs from last year. The Cubs won that game on an 11th inning homerun.
