Game Summary Lowell - The Cubs evened their record at 1-1 on clutch hitting from the bottom of the order. The bottom four hitters strung together four singles to score four runs. The bottom of the sixth started with the score 1-1. After an out to start the inning, Randy Boucher, Terry Throwe, Scot Van Winkle and Mark Hamel hit their singles. Van Winkle and Hamel recorded RBIs, a run scored on an error and Marvin Ritchie drove home the fourth run of the inning on a sacrifice fly. With the score 5-1, starting pitcher Chuck Trafton (1-0) cruised through eight innings to earn the win. Chuck gave up two runs, one earned, on seven hits, no walks and six strikeouts. The Cubs extended the lead to 8-2 in the seventh as Tom Knox knocked in Duffy Thomas with his second hit on the day. Randy Ochab knocked in Knox with a ringing double, also his second hit. Finally Randy Boucher notched his second hit to drive in Ochab. The Giants scored three runs on some sloppy play in the eighth and ninth, but the Cubs pulled it out to make the final score 8-4. The Cubs play next Sunday at 8:30 at Shedd Park versus the Yankees. It will be Cub give-away day as the Cubs will offer a gift to first 15 Cubs mothers to attend the game! |
