Game Summary

Lowell -A promising start to the playoffs and a valiant fight to the end were dashed on the jagged rocks of defeat as the Cubs dropped a 10-6 decision to the Braves.

The Cubs chances of advances to the NL finals for the second year in a row were taken away as a late ending rally to tie the game went for naught.  The Braves rally in the top of the ninth for four runs to continue their improbable run to the league finals.  By losing, the Cubs lose all tie breakers and cannot advance.

The Braves took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a home run off of starter Chuck Trafton over the short fence in right field at the Voc.  The Cubs managed to get one run back in the second as Tom Knox led off with a triple and scored on a Trafton single.

Trafton settled in after the first inning striking out six Braves after three innings.  The Braves broke through for three unearned runs in the fourth.  The Cubs escaped further damage as Duffy Thomas managed to draw an interference call on a runner advancing to third and still forcing out a runner at second.

The Cubs again tallied a run in the fifth to bring the score to 5-2 in favor of the Braves.  Thomas reached on an error and Knox doubled him in.  In the sixth, the Cubs gained ground as Jerry Kohl singled to lead off the inning, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on an Oscar Colvin groundout making the score 5-3 in favor of the Braves.

After the Braves scored  a run in sixth to extend their lead to 6-3, the Cubs staged their late rally in the eight inning.  A series of errors allowed Marvin Ritchie and Thomas to score.  Then with two outs and runners on first and third, Randy Ochab lined a first pitch to right field scoring Knox to tie the game at six.

Unfortunately, the Braves scored four in the top of the ninth to seal their win.  A lead-off error, a pair of walks and a couple of scratch hits proved the Cubs undoing, making Thomas the losing pitcher in relief.

With a win on September 8th, the Braves will advance to the league finals.  The Cubs can create a three-way tie for the pool title, but lose a tie-breaker to the Phillies by virtue of the Phillies better regular season record.

The Cubs finish their season on September 8 versus the Dodgers at Gage Park.  Jerry Kohl starts the finale.
