Game Summary
| Lowell - On a rainy, sloppy Father's Day at Gage
Park, the Cubs couldn't quite pull off the wins as the Marlins won 6-5.
Despite having 18 runners between hits and walks, the Cubs couldn't string together enough of them to score enough to win. Marvin Ritchie led the way with four hit with Chuck Trafton, Duffy Thomas and Jerry Kohl each adding two a piece. The Cubs led off the first with a run scoring single by Ritchie, an RBI triple by Thomas and an RBI double by Tom Knox. The Marlins scratched for two of their 5 unearned runs on some sloppy defense in the second to bring the score to 3-2. But the Cubs rallied for one in the third on a Knox groundout to go up 4-2. The inning featured a base running blunder as Thomas passed Ritchie on the bases. Thomas hit a deep drive to right. On the play, Ritchie was running and held up not knowing where the ball was. This play typified the day as sloppy all-around play cost the Cubs. Trafton (2-2) took a tough loss as he battled hard despite the conditions and pace of the game. The Marlins scored another two unearned runs in the fifth to tie the score. But again, the Cubs took the lead on a Ritchie double to score Jack Muse. The seventh inning saw the Marlins tie the score. A potential go ahead run was cut down at the plate as Ricky Greenhalge made a nice throw to Trafton and Trafton relayed the throw home for Knox to apply the tag. The Marlin scored the winning run in the eighth as a botched run down on a failed squeeze allowed the run to score. The Cubs look to get back on the winning track next Sunday as they host the A's at Dracut High School. |
