Game Summary

Westford - The Cubs dropped back to 3-4 as a late inning rally just missed earning the Cubs a win.

The Orioles won 13-12 in a game featuring the long and slow turf at Westford VFW field.  Many hits for both sides were the result a positioning due to the long grass.  Hard hit ground balls ended up with the pitcher making the play.

Jerry Kohl pitched admirably for the Cubs, but fell victim to many fly balls that would normally have been outs.

The Cubs started the game with 3 runs in the top of the first as Marvin Ritchie drove in one run with a single and Thomas followed with a two run single.

Unfortunately the lead was short lived as the Orioles struck for seven in the bottom half without the benefit of only hard hit ball.

The Cubs got two back in the second on a two run single by Scott Van Winkle and another run in the third as a Tom Knox triple scored Ritchie.

The Orioles scored a single run in the second and struck for three more in the fourth on more bleeders.  Randy Ochab made a fantastic diving play at third base to get the lead-off batter in the second.

The Cubs scored five big runs in the seventh to chase Orioles starter Fellar.  The key hits were an rbi double by Knox and run scoring singles by Ochab, Colvin and Van Winkle.

Tom Knox (1-2) relieved Kohl in the sixth and gave up a hard luck run in the seventh to take the loss despite giving up no hits and recording three strikeouts.

The Cubs had the tying run on second with two outs in the ninth, but couldn't tie it up.

The Cubs play the Marlins next Sunday at Gage Parl to try and bring their record back to .500.  Chuck Trafton (1-1) takes the rubber for the Cubs.
