X marks the spot...

X offers a frightening glimpse of the future: when the Dragons of Heaven and Earth battle each other. The Dragons of Earth will wipe out the existence of mankind in order to cleanse nature and save the planet, whilst the Dragons of Heaven shall rescue man from the dawning Apocalypse. Only a young boy, who has special powers, can turn the tide of events, along with the other Guardians of Heaven. As he chooses the side he will be on, his counterpart, which tragically turns out to be his best friend, is forced by Fate to join the other. The two shall battle to the death, in order to achieve their goals. One is reluctant. And one will do anything to win.

My first impression of X was "Damn. Why do the characters seem so familiar?" Then I picked up the box and my suspicions were confirmed. I had stared at my huge poster of X hanging in my room for some time now. It shows the picture of a very cute guy wielding this very familiar looking sword, which I later learned, was indeed copied from Magic Girl Rayearth. As I watched the movie, even some characters looked vaguely the same, with same haircuts, etc., So, the movie is based on CLAMP's manga mixed with some heavy animation from Mad House productions and Manga Artists (Perfect Blue, Ghost In the Shell, Macross)

The animation was beautiful, especially the blood lake and crucifixion scenes. Even just watching the eye-popping animation for the battle scenes was worth it.

The storyline was solid, and though some parts ranged from disturbing to funny, it was all in all deeply engrossing, with deep emotion. The characters are all too human, and the dialogue is sharp and intelligent.

There was not much blood and gore, as I thought there would be. The disturbing parts are places when the hero clutches the head of his friends' within his arms, sobbing over them, and such.

X was spectacular, possibly my favorite anime movie now. As the credits started to roll at the end, all I could think of was, "Wow."
