Shadow Warrior...

Wrath of the Ninja is absolutely spectacular. Though an OAV series from the 80's, it is better than some of the anime flicks made today. Interesting and stunning at the same time, this movie is a must see for any anime-lover.

There are three episodes:

1. Yotoden One: The Story Begins
2. Yotoden Two: Chapter of the Wailing Ghost
3. Yotoden Three: Chapter of the Burning Heart

In the 15th century of Japan, the unholy armies of Nobonaga have invaded the country, and only the three Shadow Warriors from different ninja clans, can unite and defeat the evil Emperor and his minions with the Shadow Weapons.

*Note An interesting facet of history has been shown here. Nobonaga was actually the Unifier of Japan, instead of the evil dark creature portrayed in this movie.

All three heroes are the last of their clans, which ignites their emotions to destroy the evil. Ayame, the strong heroine, adopts the male name of Ayanosuke and searches for revenge. Unlike many other heroines, Ayame does not once play the damsel in distress role, which is pretty rare, considering that the closest to a really strong female character is in Ninja Scroll , but even she needs rescuing.
Sakon, (cute guy alert!) and Ryoma (a big dude) are the partners thrust upon her by fate.

Throughout the movie, the heroes are confronted by demons, who come for their lives and magical weapons. It is a long story, but eventually they do come to the castle of Nobunaga, and the epic battle begins.

Nobunaga, is portrayed in the movie as an old man, and his advisor, Ranmaru, is actually playing out his secret role. This series has a unique plot twist, and a tragic ending, powerful and emotional.
