Title: Tales of the Silver Alliance Author: Sailor Eclipse E-mail: kurainonishoku@aol.com Date: 8/23/00 All standard disclaimers apply. ( ( ( ( ( ( ( ( ( Princess Serenity tipped her head back and breathed the cool, rose-scented air of the royal gardens from her balcony. The night was clear and bright with a million stars. To her left she could she the planet of Venus and Mercury, two round orbs winking sapphire and gold against the heavenly backdrop of the night sky. Princess Serenity sighed and turned her gaze to the Earth. It was far more beautiful than any other planet or star, Serenity thought. Earth looked like a small emerald and sapphire marble, and the celestial body beckoned to her. "Darien." Serenity clasped a slender white hand to her mouth violently, her body suddenly racked with intense sobs. The princess turned and raced out from the balcony, nearly tripping on her pearl gown, and into her bedroom. She pushed aside the heavy golden doors emblazoned with a crescent moon, and raced out into the Great Hall. Her slippered feet tapped lightly against the smooth white marble. She stumbled, and Serenity paused a second to catch her breath, leaning against an immense white pillar. She quickly rubbed her teary eyes, soaking her hands. She ran across the royal gardens, and onto the bridge. Erected over a flowing silver river that was home to hundreds of sparkling, luminescent fish, the Moon Bridge was one of Serenity's favorite places. It was here where she and Endymion had shared their first kiss. Crystal tears fell into the smooth river, and two tiny ripples were created. "Oh, Darien...don't leave me..." Serenity cried. Serenity fell on the ground, hunched over, her face in her hands, and she cried till she had run out of tears. Exhausted, she pulled herself back on her feet and brushed off her gown wearily. She slowly undressed herself and climbed into her great white bed, and fell immediately into a deep, dreamless sleep. *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* "Serena, darling? Are you all right?" Queen Serenity's forehead was knit in a frown as she studied her daughter's tired-looking face. Princess Serenity was a bit disheveled and there were lines at the sides of her enormous, sad eyes. "I'm all right, Mother," Serena said, her voice very quiet and detached. Mother and daughter were seated in the Morning Room, a sunny parlor with huge windows and comfortable decor in white and light blue. Serena looked very small and sad in the huge, plush chair, and she seemed to sink into the chair. Queen Serenity broke the uncomfortable silence by clearing her throat and replacing the crisp white linen napkin on her lap. "Well, Serena," the Queen started, taking her daughter's hand in her own. "I want to talk to you about Prince Darien of the Earth." At the prince's name, Princess Serenity suddenly seemed to snap back into life. Some of the blankness in her blue eyes disappeared and she looked eagerly at her mother, tightening her grip as well. "As you well know, Serena, Earth has refused to ally themselves with the Silver Alliance for centuries. However, I have finally persuaded King Daemon and Queen Helena to join with the Silver Millennium, in order to help with the war with the Nega-verse. So far, we have all the planets in the Solar System in the alliance, and with Earth joining, the alliance is complete. Tonight we shall be having a banquet in order to celebrate the alliance, and everyone will be there to witness the joining between our two kingdoms. As for Prince Darien..." Queen Serenity paused. Her daughter looked at her anxiously for the news. " I have asked him to help fight the war. He has agreed." Queen Serenity had lived more than two millennia, and never had she seen such a look of harrowing horror and despair. Princess Serenity jerked up out of her seat, shaking her head violently, as if everything was a nightmare she didn't wish to believe in. A crystal goblet filled with orange juice crashed to the ground, staining the white carpet an ugly shade of sulfurous yellow. "No," Serena croaked-she had lost her voice the night before, crying her beloved's name over and over again. "No, no, no!" she gasped, shaking her head fiercely, her eyes tightly closed. When she opened them, they were brimming with tears. They looked like twin lakes, and Queen Serenity felt her own eyes wavering. Sobbing, Serena ran out the room, crying. Queen Serenity said a silent prayer for her daughter and her love. *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* "Why, Mother?" sobbed Serena. She had collapsed on her bed, burying her face in the silken pillows. When she had cried until her eyes stung and burned. Gasping for breath, Serena raised her head slowly, resting her chin on the wet pillow. She saw her reflection in the crystal mirror from across the room, and she saw her blue eyes, rimmed around with red, her cheeks shiny and moist-looking from her tears. She flung herself on her back and allowed herself to a series of hiccups. Finally, worn out and fatigued, Serena thought of Darien. Why had her mother allowed the prince to join the war against the Dark Kingdom? The Silver Alliance was one of the most powerful in the galaxy, because of all the united strength coming from all the different planets. The Dark Kingdom was an ancient enemy, and it seemed that it was growing more powerful every passing day. The Dark Kingdom's army was composed of monsters and traitors that were banished or exiled from their home planets. Darien's own Royal Generals had turned against him and had joined with Queen Beryl and her army. Tenderly, Serena thought of her prince. Even though a skilled fighter on the battlefield, thinking him vulnerable to an unseen attack and being injured was unbearable to Serena. Darien was her life, her love, and her soul. Serena recalled that wonderful handsome face, with the midnight-blue eyes, the unruly, silken black hair that fell in boyish bangs over his forehead, and the way he held himself straight and proud. Lovingly, Serena placed her cheek on her pillow, feeling the silken texture that reminded her of his skin, and drifted into a dream of her Darien. *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* "PRINCESS SERENITY! GET DOWN FROM THERE RIGHT NOW, BRAT!" Lady Rei raced across the marbled pavement of the royal gardens in her ruby high-heeled slippers and crimson gown, panting slightly as she ran to the high wall surrounding the palace gardens. Lady Makato , her brown hair flowing behind her, was speeding after Lady Rei, still in her lime-colored kitchen apron coated with white flour. Rei stopped 10 feet short of the wall, and Makato slammed into her. But Rei did not notice. Huffing with anger, Rei bellowed, "Serena! Get off that wall! I'm going to count to three, and if you're not off by three, you're toast!! Your Mother's going to blame ME if YOUR empty head cracks open!" Seeing the princess was uncooperative and silent, Rei started the countdown. "1!!!" hollered Rei. "2....Serena! Are you listening?" "........" was her reply. "3!" yelled Rei. Makato nervously patted the angry girl's shoulders, pulling her backwards away from the princess. Serena finally turned her head towards the two girls-and stuck her tongue out. "That's it," murmured Rei vehemently, wrenching herself away from Makato's grasp. Closing her eyes and concentrating, Rei chanted a power spell. Waves of heat rolled off her body, and Makato gasped, "No, Rei, don't!" "MARS INFERNO FLAME!" shouted Rei, using her weakest attack, flames flickering around her. Serena paid no attention. Rei pointed her fingers at Serena... "KINDLE!" A spark of red fire radiated off Rei's fingertips. Suddenly, a stream of purple and black ribbons cut off the attack. A very young-looking girl with dark, shoulder-length hair and wearing a brilliant purple dress appeared. "Lady Rei, may I ask why you were attacking our princess? Really, sometimes I think you are as stupid as one of those humans!" said Hotaru. Suddenly, Princess Serenity seemed to come alive, bubbling and gushing. To Rei's astonishment and concern (even if she didn't show it) Serena lightly jumped off the wall. thought Rei. "Hotaru!!!" Serena gushed, wrapping her arms around Hotaru, who was also the senshi from Saturn. The princess looked very happy to see one of her outer senshi, especially Hotaru, whom she could see only about twice a year. "Princess Serenity!" chortled five other girlish voices. Serena whirled around, astonished and wildly happy to see all her protectors and friends, the Royal Senshi. "Michiru, Hakura, Puu, Ami, Makato, Hotaru, oh, yes, and Rei! Rei...didn't notice you..." But Serena quickly forget all else, and hugged all her beloved friends. In her Counsel Room, Queen Serenity looked up from the document she had been reading. She looked around her Counsel Room, as if searching for that noise. "Lady Serenity? Are you all right?" asked Queen Alexia of Jupiter. Queen Serenity smiled and shook her head, laughing softly, embarrassed. "No, no...I just heard this sound from outside...and I was..." King Marcus of Neptune laughed heartily and said, "Oh, it must be that little reunion our girls our having outside." Several chuckles could be heard throughout the room of royal parents. "Yes," sighed Queen Trinity of Mercury, who was also the wisest, "those girls get along so great!" King Jonathon of Mars cleared his throat from across the great table. "Listen, we really must discuss this subject of Earth! King Marcus and Queen Gaia have been very stubborn in this issue of Earth joining the Silver Alliance! We have had endless discussions and inquiries with them, but they won't listen!" admonished King Ivan suddenly. All the crowned heads looked to the King of Pluto. "What do you suggest we do, Ivan? An alliance through marriage?" asked Serenity softly. All turned to the beautiful woman with lavender hair and sapphire eyes. King Jonathon stood up angrily, pounding his fist against the table. "And which of our daughters will be put through that marriage may I ask, Serenity? Yours, mine? Well, I'll tell you now that no daughter of Mars will be married to an insolent human !" "And so whose daughter shall it be, Serenity? Venus's, Mercury's, Hotaru's? Please!" Queen Valera of Venus snapped her head up at the mention of her home, the topaz jewel glinting in her polished gold tiara. Her blue eyes flashed anger at the proposal, and her husband laid his hand atop hers to calm her. But Queen Valera, sister of the Queen of the Moon, stood up shakenly, and pointed a bejeweled finger at her sister. "Why not your moon child, Serenity?" Queen Serenity's eyes widened. Queen Trinity, the wisest, to Serenity's horror, said, "That is a good idea! Why, it would permanently seal the alliance, the moon being so near earth! It is perfect!" Several heads nodded in agreement. King Jonathon stood up. "Who agrees? Those who do raise your hands..." pleaded Queen Serenity silently. She begged with her eyes at all her friends. Several turned their heads away from the sight of the beautiful queen with plain anguish in her eyes. Queen Serenity fainted when the hands went up. *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* "I didn't know all of you would be here so soon! I wasn't expecting you for at least another week!" said Serena absently, twirling a strand of golden hair around her slender fingers. The ten friends were all sitting on the rim of the immense palace fountain in the spacious courtyard of the Crystal Palace. Minako touched her foot in the glittering water, and said, " Our parents called for an urgent meeting." "About what, exactly?" asked Michiru, her bell-like voice clear and ringing. Serena glanced at her friend and protector, Sailor Neptune with admiration. She had flowing turquoise hair, a slim body, and eyes the color of two azure oceans. She was absolutely beautiful. Then, again, thought Serena, all her friends were beautiful! Sailor Venus, or Minako, her cousin was slender with golden hair that was almost as long as her's, and sapphire eyes. Hakura, with her short-cropped hair the color of summer wheat and eyes as blue as the skies was one of the most athletic of the bunch. Pluto, of Puu, as everyone called her, was the most elegant Sailor Scout next to r Michiru with her composed manner, dark green hair and her all-seeing eyes. Sailor Hotaru was very young, but she was a promising beauty with her shoulder-length black hair and her strange and intense black eyes. Sailor Mercury, the brain of the group had short blue hair and blue eyes. Rei, pig-headed as she was, was a fiery beauty, with dark violet eyes and cascading hair as black as a raven's wing. Makato, the tomboy, had her chestnut tresses caught up in a pony-tail and had eyes as green as the trees from the strange planet, Earth. thought Serena. The strange planet that had refused to join the Silver Alliance for so many centuries. Serena also thought it the most beautiful and interesting planet, glowing in the skies green, blue, and white. She had never been there, unlike the other planets because it was considered "hostile". "Yes, Minako, why are we here?" asked Puu, breaking the silence. Minako shrugged, her slim shoulders rising and falling quickly. "I'm not sure. Something about the Earth..." "Oh..." said Serena, acting uninterested. If the others knew what she thought about Earth, they would be shocked to death. There had been ceaseless meetings and unending arguments about the stubborn planet and it's rulers. Serena had always tried to eavesdrop on these meetings, trying to get tidbits of information on this fascinating place, where there were different species of animals and plants, and the most interesting creature-the human. Abruptly, Hakura started fidgeting-she was always bored and grew restless quickly. "Stop that!" scolded Rei, impatiently. "I had to see you like that! It drives me crazy!" "Fine then! Let's go have an adventure!" suggested Hakura, happily. "Let's go visit the Postern!" She started jumping up and down. "The Postern? No way! We aren't allowed to go there, especially not to play!" admonished Michiru, shocked. Hakura made a face. "Let's go, anyways! Just to visit! It's not like we're going to transport ourselves somewhere! Besides, if we were, accidently, it would be alright, because he would be on a planet of the Silver Alliance!" "I really don't like the tone in your voice, Hakura..." said Minako. Suddenly, Serena, who had been strangely silent shouted, "Let's go!" "But, Serena..." chided Makato. "Let's go!" said Serena, tugging on Puu's hand urgently. The older girl tried to brush her hand away. "We musn't...we'd get in trouble!" "No on would know...our parents will be in the meeting for hours yet! Let's go! Besides, I'm the leading princess here, so you've got to listen to me!" said Serena triumphant. All the girls sighed, except Hakura, who was smiling happily. "Yay!" shouted the two, linking arms. The other girls (with sweat drops at their backs =) followed the crazy pair unhappily. **_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_ The Royal Postern was used for all planetary travel to all the planets in the galaxy. Each portal was a different color, and a sign was posted above each imprinted with the name of each planet. "Oh, I wish I could visit Jupiter. I haven't been there for the longest time," sighed Hotaru. Makato draped her arm around the girl's shoulders. "Don't worry," she winked, " I think my brother has a thing for your sister. It won't be too long!" Rei slapped a hand to her forehead angrily. The noise made several Solar Doves flap out of the white trees. "No! I forgot my pReir scrolls at home!" All the girls gasped. "Rei-how could you forget your scrolls! Geez! That must be a first! What was wrong with you?" asked Minako, open-mouthed. "It must have been because my father was in such a rush to get here..." said Rei. Her mother had died in childbirth. Suddenly, Michiru made a little scream, and fell unconscious. Hotaru quickly revived her with her healing powers. Michiru opened her eyes one by one. She opened her mouth. The girls, who had been hovering over her, leaned in closer. "Serena." *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* thought Serena anxiously. Where was she? The trees were a different color-many different colors, and there were multi-colored birds fluttering in the trees above. Could it be? Was she on Earth? For a moment, Serena was delighted with the prospect of being on Earth, finally. But then, just as happiness came over her, horror overcame her being. She silently gasped. Earth was not part of the Silver Alliance! She should have never ventured too close to the Earth Portal. She had been too curious, inspecting it carefully until she found herself inside the portal, then...If she was discovered, she could be held hostage! Then, the Silver Alliance would have to bargain with the people of Earth in return for her! Her mother would be so angry! But where could she go? Serena turned around hopefully, expecting a portal behind her to take her home. There was none. Surely there was a portal somwhere, otherwise the portal back home would have never been constructed! The portal must be located somewhere near the palace of the rulers of Earth. Serena shivered. She would have to be careful. Serena whispered a silent pReir and grimly set forth to seek the rulers of Earth. *_*_*_*_*_*_*__*_*_*__*_*_*_*_*_ Rei was pacing back and forth angrily across the width of the hallway, the heels of her shoes clicking sharply on the marble. The other girls were leaning against the walls or sitting with their heads bowed in the enameled chairs that were put against the wall. "How did it happen?" snapped Rei, clearly upset. "She was there, then she wasn't! I don't believe she was so STUPID as to actually go in the portal-wait, yes I do..." "It's my fault," sobbed a voice. Hakura was sitting rumpled and disheveled in the chair, with Michiru trying to console her friend the best she could. "I wanted to go see the Postern. It's my fault that the Moon Princess has been sucked somewhere out in space." "Wait, everyone!" said Ami, slowly. Everyone turned to look at her. Ami smoothed out the front of her muslim gown, and said, "She must be on one of our planets. Everyone will know who she is. She is safe..." "Yes, as long as she is on a planet of the Silver Alliance she is safe," finished Ami solemnly. But what Minako said struck dread in the hearts' of the girls. "What if...," Minako swallowed nervously, "what if she went into a planet not of the Alliance? Namely Earth?" "Let's just hope that Serena isn't there," concluded Ami after a terrible silence. *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* Serena pondered in the back of her mind as she gaped enthralled at the different and freshly new environment around her. She had been walking along a grassy road for nearly two hours, and though her feet were not accustomed to the hard walking, the pain was promptly forgotten as she took in her surroundings. Luckily, Serena could just spot Earth's Palace overlooking a high, verdant hill. It was a spectacular castle, not quite as regal or impending as her mother's moonstone palace, but high, with tall towers and blue and green flags that waved gently into the wind. thought Serena. she pReid. The sun overhead was becoming burning ball of flame in the noon sky, and Serena was beginning to feel very faint. On the moon, she had never ventured out much, staying in the palace and gardens most of her life. Of course there had been numerous diplomatic missions and visits to different neighboring planets, but royal retinues of servants had always attended her. Now she was trudging along a dirt road in a princess gown and crown in slippers in the heat of noon, dirty and sweaty. Serena brushed a lock of golden lock of hair that had fallen from the buns on top her head, and squinted her blue eyes into the sun before collapsing in the high grass. *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* "Mother, why won't we make peace with the Silver Alliance? Join with them against the Nega-verse? Earth alone cannot hold out against the Dark Kingdom by itself any longer. Is it just pride that is keeping you and father from gathering with the Alliance?" asked the young man with black hair and blue eyes. "Darien," sighed the Queen, "you just don't understand..." Darien crossed his arms restlessly, a frown creasing his brow. The Queen sighed again. Her son, who was becoming more and more like his father everyday, just didn't understand why Earth wouldn't ally themselves. The Queen stared at her handsome son, noting affectionately at the ruffled black hair that always fell over his forehead. "You'll understand one day," she said, patting his knee. Darien looked away sullenly, and the Queen became silent again. Suddenly, the carriage jolted, and the neighs of the horses outside could be heard. The Queen was knocked sideways, and her son was immediately helping her back to sitting position. Darien craned his neck out the tiny carriage window, and shouted, "Barnes-what's wrong out there?" No answer came, and Darien quickly kicked the door open-he absolutely hated traveling in carriages. He saw his footman standing in the tall, waving grass, leaning over something. Darien strolled over to Barnes. The footman moved out of his way, and Darien couldn't believe what he saw. It was a young girl outfitted in a exquisite pearl-colored gown with gold and silver stitching. She wore an unusual hairstyle, two buns worn at the top of her golden head and tails flowing from the buns. But it was her face that attracted and captivated him the most. It was a delicately molded face, with rosy cheeks, tiny, full lips, and huge eyes. He suddenly felt a strange moving in his heart, and gazed upon the slender hand that was brought over her face, with the slim white fingers and refined nails. There was also a small gold and silver band on her finger, adorned with a single white crystal. "What is it? A dead animal?" called the Queen, walking over to Darien, in her full royal attire. Darien was broken from the enchantment as he heard his mother gasp involuntarily. His mother swayed a little. "Mother-what is it?" he asked worriedly. The Queen raised a trembling finger and pointed at something Darien had missed before-the crescent moon on the girl's forehead. *_*_*_*_*_*__*_*_*_*_*_** Darien was in his bedroom, holding a tumbler of his favorite wine, legs on the expensive oak desk on top of a stack of papers. He sighed and rubbed his forehead. Right now, his parents and the Royal Counsel were discussing what to do with the princess. If they kept her hostage, it would start a war, and that was unfavorable since they were already at an unending war with the Dark Kingdom. Darien sighed, and rubbed his neck tiredly. He could she out of the panes of the window that the sun had already dipped below the western horizon, and the full moon had appeared, an ivory orb in the sky. he mused silently to himself, and he smiled quietly. The moon princess had been asleep for about two days now, and there was still no sign of any messengers from the moon demanding her back. Darien thought of that golden hair and the rose-colored lips that smiled even in sleep. Pushing back away from his desk, he stood up slowly, grimacing as he felt the soreness in his legs. He stretched, arching his back and bringing his arms over his head. He was clad in a snowy white silk shirt and black breeches, free of the normal miMakatory attire that he usually wore. Darien felt lighter and freer without the troublesome black armor and the heavy crimson cloak he generally donned. He opened the elaborately carved cheery-wood doors of his bedroom, and stood in the darkness of the hall. The brightly lit torches that were placed against the granite walls had been long-extinguished by servants, and the lone candle that Darien held cast only a weak, flickering circle of light around him. The corridors were a place of strange and menacing shadows at night, and Darien could remember him being terrified of these halls as a young boy, thinking there were monsters that were lurking behind one of the colossal pillars that adorned the hall. His candle flickered slightly, and Darien shuddered momentarily. The windows had been left open, and a draft was pouring in. A river of moonlight streamed in from the large opening, and Darien again thought of the princess. Darien was silently chuckling to himself, thinking of her amusing hair, when he heard the unmistakable sound of something brush across the tiled floor. He quickly blew out his candle, leaving him in semi-darkness-the only light came from the moon. He immediately became quiet, and positioned himself against the cold walls, and began treading softly in the direction of the noise. *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* Darien could not see anything, except his hands when he held them inches away from his face. He saw a dark figure in front of him, standing near the window, also, and the glittering of something that looked like diamonds. The figure gasped loudly, and turned away quickly. But Darien was quicker. He groped in the darkness, until he caught something in his hand. It felt like silk between his fingers, and he began pulling it, until the figure was made to walk backwards toward him. "What is this?" he asked quietly, pulling the figure to his side. The figure whimpered slightly, and he knew it was a female. He drew the figure closer to him, and turned the person's face towards the light. Darien's breath caught in his throat. The silvery moonlight streamed across the beautiful pale face, which had a delicate rosy flush across the ivory skin. Strands of shining golden hair fluttered around her head, framing the small, exquisite face. Darien used all his might to tear himself away from the elegant and soft creature. He exhaled sharply, and bowed down low. "My princess," he said, and looked at the moon princess. She nodded slightly. Her eyes were blue. *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* Serena had awakened in a strange room, in a strange bed. And on a strange planet. She had sprung up from the bed when she found herself in the unfamiliar room, wearing a nightgown that scratched her skin. she had thought. Serena had dragged her aching body out of the gigantic bed with a huge velvet coverlet, and tried to stand, wobbling on her feet. The room was spacious and elegantly adorned, but it was stifling hot and Serena longed for cool air of the outdoors. "Oh," sighed Serena, leaning against the door. Serena suddenly had a inquisitive feeling. She desperately wanted to get out of the over-decorated and suffocating room. She was determining whether or not to listen to the notion. Serena shrugged and whispered to herself, "Why not?" Serena opened the door very slowly, and peeked out of the tiny crack. When she was sure there was no one walking in the hallway, she very slowly eased herself outside. It was very dark. wondered Serena. The hallways back home were always lit with frosty magic flames that gleamed from holders made of gold on the walls. She closed behind her the beautiful doors made out of a foreign wood, and wandered in the dark and dismal hallways. There were open windows and Serena had stood in front of one, inhaling the sweet night air that was so similar to the moon's that she now stood watching. The pale, milky white light coursed in front of the opening, spilling over Serena. thought Serena sadly. Her friends must be so anxious. Did her mother know yet? A lone tear slipped from her closed eyes and coursed down her cheeks. Suddenly, Serena saw someone coming towards her in the dark. She whimpered gently, fear coursing through her being. She shrank back from the welcoming arms of the moonlight and back into the shadows. The figure had grabbed her hair, and Serena had obligingly walked towards the figure. She nearly melted when she saw who was holding her. Serena found herself in the arms of the most handsome man she had ever seen. Handsome beyond belief, with dark blue eyes and wonderful black hair that fell in bangs over his smooth brow. The arms that were wrapped around her felt warm and very hard, and she felt at peace in their warm embrace. The man had then hesitantly broke away, saddening Serena, and had bowed. "My princess," he had said, and Serena almost fainted, hearing the gentle, husky voice of the stranger. Serena remembered her princess manners, and had curtsied, although she felt silly, her being in only a thin nightgown with her hair undone. "My lord," she had whispered, albeit she wasn't sure if he was one. He looked like a god, though, and when she stood up from her curtsy and offered him her hand, he had kissed it with great civility, the silken lips brushing her hand. Serena felt goosebumps up and down her arm and shivered from his touch. "I'm sorry, milady, " the young man straightened himself, releasing her hand slowly, and said, "may I escort you back to your chambers?" thought Serena. She found her voice and said yes. "What is your name, sir?" she asked, on the way to her chambers. The young man smiled, and she could see the glint of pearly white teeth. He opened her door, and gently pushed her inside, still facing her. "Endymion," he said, and closed the door *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* wondered Serena. She felt light-headed and dizzy. she chided herself angrily. Serena hit herself on the head, miffed, and she sighed in exasperation. Serena started to think of more important things. Already, Serena could see out of the large windows that by this time already, the sky outside was turning a dusky indigo, and the first rosy glimpses of dawn were evident just over a hill. Serena yawned, overcome with tiredness, and climbed into the foreign bed. She fell asleep with a dream of her and the handsome gentleman dancing together. *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* "My Queen, my Royal Sovereigns," said Sailor Venus orderly, bowing low to the many seated rulers in front of her. Beads of moisture welled up on her forehead, and Minako slowly let out her breath. Her heart was pounding, and she was fearful of what was to happen. "Rise, Princess Minako of Venus," said a refined, silvery voice. Minako allowed herself to slowly rise, and take the customary two steps forward in front of the Supremacy Throne. The tremendous room of the Moon Kingdom was especially impressive, with twenty thrones, starting with the indigo thrones of Saturn and the dark maroon ones of Pluto at the ends, and in the middle, was the Emperial Silver Lunarian Throne. Here sat Queen Serenity, a vision outshining the others in her attire of glittering white and silver, her lavender hair in the odango and pigtail arrangement, the traditional hairstyle of royal women from the moon. At Serenity's sides were all the other monarchs, shining in their royal robes and symbolic colors. The great banner of the Silver Alliance was displayed on the wall, and Minako felt a feeling of pride. Minako's mother and father, seated side by side in their golden thrones studded with topazes, looked down at their daughter with affection in their eyes, and Minako's eyes wavered at their magnificence. Someday, Minako thought, she would be seated there, sided by her beloved princess, a member of the New Silver Millenium. "Princesses, you have all inquired to speak in presence of the Silver Court," said Queen Serenity. The senshi bowed their heads. "Please voice yourselves...Princess Minako?" the Queen addressed the lead senshi. Minako composed herself, and took a large breath. "My queen, we have gathered here to beg your forgiveness and help" Queen Serenity seemed bewildered, as did the other monarchs. "Please explain yourself," she said. Minako looked up at the beautiful queen, afraid to hurt the wonderful queen. She could sense that the other senshi were growing morose, and she could hear a sniffle behind her. She could see that the other rulers were growing more alarmed, as if feeling the impending news. Suddenly, the other senshi fell on their knees before the queen. Queen Serenity, shocked, said, "What is this?" King Jonathon of Mars and Queen Gabrielle of Pluto also stood in disbelief at what was happening. "Your daughter, under our care- has disappeared," she cried, and Minako, in her grief, flung herself on the steps leading up to the great platform. Queen Serenity quavered for a second, and stumbled back into her great throne, weeping. *_*_*_*_*__*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* A knock came at his door, and Darien gracefully swung his feet off the table before, shouting, "Enter!" The door was pushed open wide, and Darien was surprised to see his four royal guards promenade into the room, in their full guard apparel, complete with sweeping ebony capes and golden tassels. "Jed, Nephrite, Zoicite, Kunzite-what in the world are you doing..." He was cut off short by Kunzite, who bowed down deeply, the inky cloak stroking the ground. "The Majesties your Royal parents have summoned you, my lord," replied Kunzite formally, his head still bowed. Darien slapped his old friend on the shoulder, and laughed cheerfully. "Really, Kunzite, no need for such formalities!" Kunzite, his chief general straightened and coughed, abashed. Nephrite laughed, his blue eyes twinkling. Jadeite punched Darien in the shoulder. "Did you see the princess?" Jadeite asked Darien. Darien thought of the night before. He cleared his throat. "Why, yes, "he stammered. "What does she look like?" asked Zoicite. Darien opened his mouth to speak, but abruptly, Kunzite kicked his friend in the shin. Zoicite winced in pain and fell down. Ignoring Zoicite, Kunzite again bowed. "Your parents have summoned you to the throne room. It has to do with the moon princess. They wish that all of their court be there when they pass their decision." Darien looked confused, so Zoicite cut in with pain in his face. "About the Moon Princess, my prince. Ouch!" Darien's confused look disappeared, and he smiled in gratitude at his long-time protector and companion. He and his four royal guards had been comrades since childhood and into manhood. They had done everything together, hunting, playing in trees, and had entered their first battle together as well. "Right, let's go then," Darien said, and his friends followed, with a limping Zoicite. *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* His parent's meeting room was a spacious one with long, polished mahogany tables that seated up to forty people. The doors of the hall were opened by two sentinels clothed in black and gold livery, and Darien nodded his head in thanks to them. He stood in the entranceway with his guards, and bowed low to his parents. King Marcus stood up from his chair, and ordered his son to the seat by his side. When everything was ready, the king clapped his hands loudly. Darien sat erectly in his seat, and watched the double doors almost anxiously. The double doors swung open, and a large escort appeared. They parted, and a loud gasp could be heard throughout the room. Darien caught his breath in his throat. She was more magical and beautiful than the enchanting night before. Her golden hair was a shining halo around her head, and the silky ends flowed down near the marble. Her eyes were more luminous and sparkling then the sapphires in his father's collection of precious gems, and her face was more beautiful and perfect than the roses in the gardens. The princess from the moon was dressed in a pure white gown with elaborate embroidery in gold and silver, and she wore simple diamonds that were polished into spheres in her hair. Again, Darien felt that strange tugging sensation in his heart, and he felt giddy and extraordinarily elated. He looked around him, and he saw that everyone had stood up, in acknowledgement of such beautiful royalty. His father bowed low. "Princess Serenity, we welcome you to our kingdom of Earth," stated his father. thought Darien. Princess Serenity curtsied with the grace of a cat, and everyone seated themselves again. "My lord," spoke Princess Serenity for the first time, "I implore your majesties to send me back to my home. My kingdom would be in much appreciation for your planet." King Marcus leaned over and whispered to his wife briefly. He turned back to the princess. "My princess, for long centuries the Silver Alliance has petitioned Earth to join the Alliance. Earth has refused many times, but even so, the Silver Alliance badgers our planet. If we return you to your home, the Silver Alliance must stop pleading with our people." Serena was speechless for a moment, but she found her tongue once more. "Sire, it is not in my position to tell you what the Silver Alliance will and won't do. A meeting with the Silver Millennium, perhaps..." King Marcus shook his head. "No more meetings. We will inform the moon of your arrival on Earth, and we will see whether or not your kingdom wishes you back. For now, you shall stay here until a messenger from moon arrives for you. That is all." The meeting was over. *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* Serena was shaken. She felt despair creep into her heart, and unwelcome tears stung her eyes. Serena decided bravely. She bit her lip until she tasted the coppery blood well up inside her mouth. Despite her valiant efforts, a solitary tear slid down her white cheek, glittering like a diamond. Infuriated with herself, Serena composed herself once more, with the dignity of a princess and the pride of a future queen. Serena almost spat the words in her mind. All the humans were now talking in their bawdy voices to each other, ignoring her. Another tear trailed down her cheek, and she wiped it away furiously. Her hand still poised on her cheek, Serena suddenly caught someone looking at her from the corner of her eye. She whipped to face the ill-mannered person, and her heart froze in her chest. It was the considerate young man from the night before. He was still the most handsome man she had ever laid eyes upon, and she again felt a fluttering in her chest. But she hardened her heart, and narrowed her eyes, hateful of everyone, even this man who had shown her such civility. she declared. *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_**_*_* Darien knew that his father had been unreasonably harsh with the princess. After all, how she must feel, knowing that it was she who had destroyed years of effort made by the Silver Alliance! But he was unduly shocked when he saw the contempt and passion flashing in the princess's eyes when his father passed the judgement. She had stood up taller and straighter, and the regal and mysterious aura that surrounded her increased tenfold. His father's advisors were impressed with the young princess, and had tried to persuade their king to be kind-hearted to the princess. But his father had refused. Darien had seen her courageously standing her ground, and when she stroked the wetness of her cheek, he felt his heart break in half. Darien longed at that moment to comfort her and hold her like that night before, and to soothe her and bring that magical smile back on her face. It was very strange, and Darien was very puzzled with himself. Why was he acting this way? Why was he acting so ridiculous? He kept on thinking this, even as they took the princess away. *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_ "Your majesties!" cried a voice loudly. Queen Alexia signaled the herald over to her. The messenger hurried to the queen's side. "What is it?" she asked the young boy. " A message from Earth arrived, my Queen! The princess is on the planet Earth! They shall hold her there and the Silver Alliance promises to leave Earth alone!" Queen Alexia nodded gravely, and thanked the lad. She walked over to Serenity, who was still pale, and told her the news. Serenity screamed when she heard this. "Are you certain of this?" asked Queen Aeris of Uranus, her husband King Zephyr along-side her. Sailor Mars cut in, "Yes, it is the truth." Queen Aeris glanced at her daughter's friend, feeling assured. Princess Rei of Mars had mystic powers of foresight, and could use the holy fires that burned in the special temples dedicated to Mars on the moon to see into the future. "We shall send the princess's Royal Senshi and a small army to Earth, and we shall get the princess back," soothed Queen Gabrielle, holding Queen Serenity's trembling hands. Serenity nodded weakly, and managed a weak smile. King Cerel of Mercury took control and ordered the guard nearest him, "Assemble an army of 500, quickly! Be ready in an hour!" He then turned to the senshi, who still stood behind him gravely. thought the soldier, but he turned away to do his king's bidding immediately. "You shall accompany us to Earth. If we get into conflict, be ready to transform." The tone in his voice was grim, and he said gently to the troubled senshi, "We will get the princess back no matter what." "Let's go," he said, motioning to his private protectors. "Wait!" cried Queen Trinity, hastening to his side. "We're coming too!" "I think not, madam!" King Cerel said. "What if a fight breaks out?" Queen Trinity crossed her arms and said, "I didn't spend all those years as a senshi for nothing, Cerel! I'm going, and so is everyone else!" motioning to Queen Gabrielle and the other queens. Cerel looked at his wife and shrugged-there was nothing he could do to stop his wife and her stubborn friends. Queen Serenity struggled to stand up, supporting herself on the silver staff which held the Imperial Silver Crystal, the ultimate weapon, and the one object that would protect the Silver Alliance from the Dark Kingdom, and destroy it. "I'm going." She said, once more regal and majestic. King Cerel bowed down low, in a symbol of absolute respect to the queen. *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* "My, God...I can't stay here any longer!" cried Minako, tears streaming down her white cheeks. Setsuna wrapped her arms around the senshi's sobbing leader. Minako turned her head and buried it into her shoulder. "It's all right V-babe," whispered Puu, sadly, rocking Minako back and forth. Minako shook her head in protest. "The look on the face of the queen...it tore my heart out. It's all our fault for her distress and agony." Minako said, choking on her tears. Puu looked over Minako's golden head at the others, who were standing before her. All of them had misery written their faces, and Setsuna could feel a bead of crystalline tear on her face. She covered a hand to her mouth, holding back the tears. "We have to help," whispered Rei. All heads turned to her. "How, Mars?" asked Michiru quietly, her musical voice soft and sweeping with the grief that she held. Rei, her voice nearly cracking with emotion, said, "We have to come up with a plan of some sort to help get Serena back. We must!" "But how?" inquired Hakaru, her face set in fierce concentration. "Well," said Rei, "we wouldn't any fighting, even though our parents might want it. If there is to be battle, it could forever destroy the Silver Alliance's chance at having Earth join the Silver Millennium. We must find a way to get Serena back without any actual fighting, and perhaps persuade Earth to unite as well!" "Nice plan," commented Makato dryly, "but how are we actually going to do all that, hm?" Rei opened her mouth, but then decided against it, and fell back, looking dejected. "I can do it," spoke a voice. Everyone looked up to see Hotaru standing in front of them, fully transformed, holding her scimitar and staff in her hand. Hotaru was the most powerful senshi, as well as the youngest, and wore as a symbol of power, Sailor Saturn had a special uniform, a darkish violet, with a brooch the shape of a splintered diamond. "I'll use my powers of silence upon them, and they'll have to agree," she proposed solemnly. The other senshi contemplated this. "Agreed, everyone?" queried Ami. Everyone nodded with confidence. *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* "My princess?" asked Darien carefully, knocking gently on the door of the captive princess. He could hear distinctive sounds of weeping on the other side of the wall. Serena, who had her face embedded in the satin pillows, sat up with a sudden gasp. Was that a knock on her door? Wiping the tears of her face with care, Serena tried to make herself appeared less rumpled and more in control. She laid a trembling a hand on the knob, and turned. There was the sound of two gasps. Darien stared into wide, pacific-blue eyes, and Serena gazed in turn at the darkest, midnight eyes that she had ever beheld. The tears that Serena cried had only illuminated her eyes and made them sparkle with a brilliance that rivaled the most lustrous sapphires. Serena suddenly remembered who this young man was. He was the one in the hallway that fateful night! A blush crept over her cheeks. But then, he was also there at the judgement, by the king's side. That could mean one thing... "My prince," she said, shocked at her own stupidity, and was about to bow, before realizing that his father had sentenced her! She remained upright, and challenged those beautiful eyes with her own. Darien, dared by the angry glint in the princess's eyes, said, "I am sorry, my princess. My father was too severe with you. You should be allowed to return to your family." The angry stare was immediately replaced of one that reflected confusion and mixed feeling. Gratitude? Joy? Contempt? Apparently all three. Princess Serenity said, although her voice cool and collected, had a note of happiness in it. "Thank you kindly, Prince Endymion. I appreciate your concern for my well-being, but pity your father cannot be swayed." "Yes, I agree," Darien said, taken aback by her coolness. "Princess, would you like to leave the stuffiness of your chambers and take a stroll in our gardens? The beauty of flowers can ease anyone's troubled soul." Darien said, and prayed she would say yes. Serena looked into his wonderful eyes, and knew she could trust him. She laid her hand onto his offered arm, and with barely controlled excitement in her voice, said, "Yes." *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* "Roses!!!" cried Serena, unlatching herself from the prince. His name was Darien, she learned, but his formal name was Endymion, like hers was Serenity. Darien was much better than Endymion-the latter was considerably more easily pronounceable. Serena touched one of the crimson petals of the barely recognizable flowers tenderly, caressing the pliant petals delicately. She looked behind her shoulder at Darien, excitement all over her face. "They are so different looking from the lunar roses! Yet they have the same sweet smell," said Serena happily, inhaling the fragrant perfume of the rose. "And so many different colors, too!" she said, motioning at the yellow, pink, white, blue, and more rare, black roses. "I'm happy you enjoy them," Darien said. He was enjoying himself immensely. The princess broke out of her princess shell the moment she spotted the first scarlet blossom. Roses were his favorite flower also, and strolling alone in the royal gardens had been one of his favorite pastimes. Now he enjoyed wandering the gardens along with this energetic and beautiful girl who seemed to be overfilled with life. "I love this garden," sighed Serena, "it's so unique!" She smiled her brightest smile at Darien, and received a gorgeous smile that melted her in return. There was a long silence, and Serena both of them looked down on the grassy ground, embarrassed. "I'm sorry I was so cold back there," she whispered, feeling a blush creep over her face. " It's just that I was so upset over the judgement. I shouldn't have blamed you for another's doing." Darien, unwittingly, touched her cheek with his finger. It was softer and more delicate than he had ever known. His fingers trembled, as did his voice when he said, "It doesn't matter, Serena." A current of unknown emotions ran through her, as she heard him say her name in his wonderful, husky voice. Darien was equally enchanted and felt himself grow dizzy with passion and feeling. He lowered his face to her, and could feel her sweet breath on his face as she raised her face to meet his. Serena was dazed. Was this really happening. She felt a strange emotion in her. Could it be love? So quickly? They were so close, and it was so perfect, and... Boom! Serena gasped at the unexpected noise. Darien quickly broke apart from Serena, as much as he hated to, but the sound of the drums were nothing to ignore. "What is it?" Serena asked, frightened. Darien brought her into his embrace, and kissed her forehead soothingly. "It's alright. I think your mother is here. Look," he said, motioning behind Serena. A great assembly of people in multi-colored clothing had gathered near the entranceway of the great palace, and Serena recognized the waving banner of the Silver Alliance. "Mother!" she cried, and started forward, but Darien held her back. She looked into those eyes again, and felt a wave of emotion flood through her being. "Stay here, love," he murmured, holding her close, their foreheads touching. "There might be trouble. I'll send for you later..." "Yes..." whispered Serena, and he was off. *_*_*_*_*_** "King Marcus! Queen Gaia! The Silver Alliance is here!" shouted the soldier who was running towards them. He would've ran into the rulers if another guard hadn't pushed him away onto his knees. "Bow before you sovereigns, soldier!" growled the guard. "It's all right," said Gaia, and asked the frightened soldier, "What do you mean by the Silver Alliance is here?" "The Silver Alliance is here!" exclaimed the soldier, upset that the rulers did not seem to believe him. King Marcus shook his head doubtfully, unwilling to believe that one of his own warriors would be steeped in such stupidity. "Soldier-the Silver Alliance is a group of planets and twenty rulers that have allied themselves together. It isn't possible that a whole flock of powerful leaders have just suddenly appeared on earth! And along with Queen Serenity of the Moon Kingdom, one of the most powerful woman in the galaxy? Are you sure?" asked Marcus, a slight sneer in his voice. The soldier nodded his head vigorously. "Father! Mother! The Silver Alliance is here!" yelled Prince Darien, racing towards them, jumping over the clipped rose hedge. Queen Gaia paled and laid her white hand upon her husband's arm. "Dear God." She murmured. *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_** "Tell your king and queen the Silver Millennium is upon their threshold," commanded King Jonathon to the terrified boy. "They use boys as soldiers," he said to King Ragen, the king of Jupiter. The king nodded roughly. The group of rulers were flanked by each of their own groups of royal soldiers, who were bedecked in their finest uniforms in their planet's colors-crimson, canary-yellow, sapphire, forest-green, turquoise, gold, indigo, burgundy, orange, and silver. The Royal Senshi, who remained as they were, stood by their parents, dressed as princesses. King Marcus and Queen Gaia appeared shortly in the courtyard where the other royal party was assembled. Their son Darien was with them, along with his bodyguards, attired in the costume of the crown prince of Earth. "He's so cute," whispered Rei, motioning to Jadeite to Minako, and received a sharp nudge in the ribs by Makato. The King and Queen of Earth seemed nervous, but they stayed cool and collected, dazzled by the Silver Alliance's splendor but unwilling to show it. "My dear King and Queen," said a sweet voice. Queen Serenity stepped forward, addressing the rulers of Earth. "Queen Serenity," said Queen Gaia. Queen Serenity looked very serious. "Rulers of Earth, return my daughter, and there shall be no fighting today." King Marcus stubbornly shook his head. "Not unless you promise to leave Earth alone, Serenity!" he shouted in a firm voice. The Silver Alliance was beginning looked very incensed. Many clenched their fists in anger. Queen Serenity stayed determined. "Return her to us, and we shall not harm you! We do not wish to fight! All I want is my daughter back, Marcus." shouted Darien in his mind. "Harm us, Serenity? You are mistaken, my lady! Look around!" The king swept his arm to all four sides. Darien followed the direction of his father's fingers, and saw that legions of soldiers, clad in coal black armor, had surrounded the Silver Alliance and their small army. King Jonathon started forward, his hand on the hilt of his blade, his face red, but King Thomas of Saturn held him back forcefully. Some of the senshi were also ready to transform, but were stopped by warning looks from their parents. Minako was mystified by the caution in her mother's eyes as she mouthed the word 'No'. Did her parents have some sort of secret plan? Her thoughts were interrupted by King Marcus. "We outnumber you, Serenity! You must heed us, or you and the Alliance shall be the ones to fall!" declared King Marcus, triumphant. "You were all fools, to come parading to bedecked in splendid garments, with no protection but a small troop of soldiers to guard you, and some little girls to fight against the strength of my bodyguards?" When he uttered these words, the soldiers clothed in black raise their weapons and cheered. A few sauntered up to the Silver Alliance, and shook their swords at them. Queen Serenity seemed outraged, but before she could speak, she could feel a small hand against her arm. She looked down, surprised to see the young Sailor Saturn at her side. Sailor Saturn, much to the astonishment of both sides, she stood in front of the queen, as to protect her. Queen Serenity tried to push Hotaru back into the crowd for safety, but Sailor Saturn, stared at the queen with her black eyes, and the queen understood. Princess Hotaru of Saturn, the only scout that had transformed, walked up to the king and queen of earth. Queen Gaia gasped inwardly, and many soldiers shrank back a little in fear. This small girl emitted a strange aura, more powerful and old than they had ever known, and her profound black eyes, two pools of ink, burned into the cores of their souls. The king and queen felt small prickles on their arms, and a sudden, sharp wind cut through them. Sailor Saturn, in the view of all, raised her scimitar in the air. Staring transfixed, Darien heard the extraordinary young girl whisper mystical words of power. "Cessation Silent Messiah." Darien shivered uncontrollably at the unnatural words. He had heard legends of the senshi, and of their mystical elemental powers, but he had always thought them to be remarkable stories and nothing more. He shivered again, and he cautiously looked around. Something was very wrong. There was a stillness in the air, and it felt as if death had permeated the very roots of the trees in the courtyard. The twittering of the evening birds could not be heard, and an unexplainable chill had settled over the kingdom. Sailor Saturn slowly lowered her scimitar, and again the cooing of the snow-white doves filled the warm night air. "My king, return my daughter to me," said Queen Serenity once more. Darien's father, overwhelmed by the ordeal, nodded dumbly, eyes void of emotion. *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* panicked Serena, and she started to run blindly throughout the maze of rose hedges. What was this unexplainable chill in the air? This feeling of something formidable approaching. Serena tripped over the hem of her gown, sending her sprawling to the hard pavement. Her wrists were scratched, and little welts were appearing as well. Rubbing her hands together, Serena stood up, feeling a sharp pain in her ankle. Suddenly, the pain overwhelmed her and she fainted, red spots of fading sunlight melting into the blackness of her lids. End of Book 1
