The septicemic plague was the rarest and most deadly form of the Black Death.

The symptoms of septicemic plague are high fever and DIC. DIC, or disseminated intravascular coagulation, can cause the extremities of the body to turn a dark purple or even black, giving the Black Death its name. Examples of DIC shown below.


How this form is contracted is unknown. It has a nearly 100% mortality rate and no treatment. Death usually occurs the same day as the symptoms appear.
