May I Have This Dance
"Get out!" Hilde slammed her hands down on the counter, almost causing her mug of coffee to tip over into her lap. "You’re joking."
Over the vid-phone, Relena Peacecraft hid a smile.
"Nope. I’m completely serious. This is a formal invitation. Milliardo is making me go to this party and I need someone to accompany me. You fit the job perfectly. I have to warn you, though. It’s going to be extremely boring with all those officials there, sizing us up. You sure you want to come?"
Hilde’s eyes shone with happiness.
"You know I’ve always wanted to go to one of those fancy dress balls everyone talks about. It’s been my dream since I was a little kid. Of course I want to go. But what about Heero? Isn’t he escorting you?"
Relena shook her head.
"Oh he’ll be there. But as a bodyguard, watching from the shadows. You know him, always on the lookout for some impending threat. I need someone to I can talk to without worrying that I’m distracting them from their duty. Not that there won’t be constant danger at the party; old ladies that glare at you, old ladies that pinch cheeks and say that they knew you when you were in diapers, old men that try to hug you, basically a lot of old people…are you still sure you want to go?"
Hilde giggled. "Yep. I just need to find something to wear."
Relena smiled wryly.
"That’s not gonna be a problem for me. I’ve got stuffy party dresses coming out the ears. Not to mention the most uncomfortable pair of pink pumps I have ever seen. But they match, by god. See you on Tuesday."
"Bye." Hilde switched off the phone and stared at the blank screen for a couple of moments. Then she turned a few happy whirls around the living room, smiling widely.
I’m gonna get to dance at a Ball. A real, live Ball."Whoa, Hilde. Have you gotten into the sugar, again?"
Hilde stopped her whirling to see the familiar form of Duo Maxwell, leaning against the wall with an amused smirk on his face. Hilde blushed, embarrassed at being caught doing something so stupid.
"Relena has invited me to go to the Ambassador’s Ball with her."
"The party for all the big-wigs? I’m impressed. Quatre told me he was attending with Trowa."
Hilde looked at Duo inquisitively.
"Are you going, Duo?"
Duo blinked at Hilde for a moment and then laughed.
"Are you kidding? I hate those types of parties. All those stuffy rich people looking at you over their dishes of fish eggs."
Hilde giggled.
"It’s called caviar, Duo."
Duo shrugged.
"Fish eggs are fish eggs. Besides, can you see me in a suit?"
Hilde tried to imagine Duo, who had always worn the most comfortable clothes he could find, in a tux. She shook her head.
"Guess not."
"So what are you going to wear?"
Hilde pursed her lips in thought.
"Good question. Guess I’ll have to go shopping. Wanna come with?"
Duo got a panicked look on his face and slowly inched his way out of the room.
"You know, I’d love to Hilde. Except I’ve got to….uh…..repaint the Deathscythe. Yeah, that’s it. Sorry."
He dashed out of the house, his braid flying behind him.
Hilde smiled.
Some things never change.
***********************************************************************
Hilde looked at the colorful array of dresses before her, wide eyed.
"See anything you like, miss?"
Hilde turned to see the store clerk smiling helpfully at her.
"Um…I don’t know. I’ve never gone shopping for a fancy dress before."
The store clerk’s smile grew wider.
"I have just the thing. Come with me."
Hilde allowed herself to be dragged to the back of the store by the clerk and wondered what she was getting herself into.
"Now with your skin color and those eyes…"
The clerk rummaged around on the rack for a bit before triumphantly holding up a dress.
"Here you go. This will do nicely."
Hilde looked at the fabric, apprehensively.
"Are you sure…"
The clerk ignored Hilde’s uncertainties and shoved her into a dressing room.
"You put that on and I’ll se if I can find you some shoes to match and maybe a purse, some hair barrettes…."
The clerk’s voice faded as she walked away, leaving Hilde alone with the dress.
Well, I guess I could try it…
A few minutes later the clerk returned with an armful of shoes and accessories. She knocked on the dressing room door.
"Are you finished, dear?"
A muffled voice came from inside.
"Yes."
The clerk sighed in exasperation.
"Well then come on out! I don’t have all day, you know."
Slowly, the door swung open and Hilde timidly stepped out of the room. Her form was clad in a long, satiny, sleeveless sheath of midnight blue with tiny, silver rhinestones sewn into the waist like perfect stars against a heavenly sky. The clerk drew in a breath. Hilde flushed, nervously.
"You look absolutely exquisite, my dear. Now put these on and then you can have a look at yourself in the mirror."
Hilde obediently slid the long white gloves over her arms and slipped her feet into a pair of delicate blue and silver, high-heeled sandals. The clerk then led her over to the old-fashioned, floor-length mirror. Hilde looked at herself in astonishment.
Is that really me? I look so different. So…
"Beautiful," the store clerk exclaimed. "You’re positively radiant. Now will that be cash or cheque?"
Hilde wordlessly handed the store clerk her credit card.
**********************************************************************
"Hey, Hilde! How’d the shopping go? Did you find what you were looking for?"
Hilde smiled at Duo and shut her closet door, quickly.
"Yes. I found a dress."
A dress that cost almost as much as that Gundam you’re working on.
Duo grinned back at Hilde.
"Great. So now that that’s done….what’s for supper?"
Hilde sighed and rolled her eyes.
"How did I know that you were going to say that?"
Duo blinked innocently.
"Gee, I don’t know, Hildey. You must be psychic."
He ducked the pillow Hilde threw at him and ran, laughing, out of the room at top speed.
Hilde followed, grabbing another pillow off her bed for ammo.
*********************************************************************
Hilde sighed and gave herself one last check in the mirror. She was rather pleased with the way her normally unruly black curls had decided to behave. They were restrained in the silver clips and framed her heart-shaped face, prettily. Her lips were pink and glossy and the apples of her cheeks were tinged with the barest hint of blush. All in all not an unpleasant picture. Hilde smiled at her reflection and grabbed her matching, satin purse off the vanity. She left her room and wandered into the living room. She glanced at the clock. Relena’s limo would be by to pick her up in a few minutes. Hilde tried to quell the excitement in her stomach as she walked out to the garage to inform Duo that she was leaving soon. The lights were dim and she squinted in the dark. She looked around before spotting Duo who was bent over some parts on the ground.
"Duo! I’m leaving soon. Remember to lock up when you’re done."
Duo turned to look at Hilde. His movements were slow and his expression seemed off somehow. His normal grin was replaced by a blank look on confusion.
"Duo?"
Hilde took a step closer. Duo blinked at Hilde and then slumped to the ground, unconscious.
"Oh my god! Duo!"
Hilde ran to his side and hauled his head into her lap. His face was pale in the darkness of the room and his skin was hot to the touch. Hilde hurriedly checked his breathing. It was shallow but steady. She sighed with relief and proceeded to drag his motionless form out of the cold garage and into the house.
**********************************************************************
Hilde removed the thermometer from Duo’s mouth and frowned at the results.
103 degrees. That isn’t good. Why didn’t he tell me he was sick?
Guilt tugged at her heart. She wasn’t paying attention. She should have seen that he was unwell. Especially when he only had one helping of pancakes at breakfast and didn’t come out of the garage for lunch. That should have been a dead giveaway that something was wrong.
He’s my best friend. I need to take care of him. No matter what.
Hilde sighed and placed a cold compress on Duo’s hot forehead. He stirred and mumbled something. Hilde gasped hopefully.
"Duo! Can you hear me? Open your eyes."
Duo slowly lifted his lids. His normally sparkling violet orbs were bright with fever and he didn’t appear to see her. He moaned pitifully and his eyes closed once more. Hilde caressed the warm cheek and pulled the covers up around his chin. She placed a chair next the bed and settled herself in for a long night.
************************************************************************
Duo’s dreams were strange and frightening. Dark, distorted shadows and walls of flame reached out to consume him and ghostly wraiths screamed and moaned curses at him. Duo covered his ears with his hands and tried to run but his legs were locked in place. He fell to his knees instead.
"No! What do you want? Leave me alone. I didn’t mean to…oh please go away!"
The shadows moved in closer and Duo wept in terror. The flames built up around him. He was burning! Then, suddenly, a coolness penetrated the flames and a soothing voice called his name. The wraiths seemed to draw back at the sound of the voice and the flames abated leaving Duo alone in peaceful slumber.
****************************************************************************
Hilde checked his temperature again. It had lowered considerably in the past couple of hours. Hilde sighed with relief and smoothed back the bangs from Duo’s sweat-dampened forehead.
He’s going to be okay. He’s going to be just fine.
Hilde smiled and looked down at her clothing.
I should probably change out of this dress.Hilde was glad that Relena had been so understanding about the situation.
<flashback>
"He’s sick?"Relena’s features grew taut with worry.
"Do you want me to get Sally Po over there?"
Hilde shook her head.
"No. I think I can handle it myself. I’m sorry that I can’t go with you to the Ball. But he needs someone to take care of him."
Relena smiled.
"I understand. I’ll just stick close to Trowa and Quatre. They can save me from the old ladies. You just watch over that man of yours."
As Relena’s face disappeared from the screen Hilde stared at it, puzzled.
‘That man of yours? What did she mean by that?’
Hilde shook her head and hurried back to her bedroom where she had deposited the insentient Duo.
Duo’s breathing became much deeper and his face lost some of that ghost-like paleness. Evidently whatever virus had taken him over was retreating now. The danger had passed. Hilde leaned back in her chair and allowed herself to fall into an exhausted sleep.
********************************************************************************
The irritating call of mourning doves woke Duo from his repose. He opened his eyes reluctantly and squinted at the bright sunshine filtering through the window.
Wait a minute, my room doesn’t have a window…Duo’s eyes opened completely. Hilde’s room. He was in Hilde’s room. Duo looked around and saw Hilde, sleeping in a chair beside the bed. Hilde’s bed.
Hmm. This isn’t what I’d had in mind when I imagined being in Hilde’s bed.Duo mentally slapped himself for thinking such hentai thoughts about a friend. Especially a good friend like Hilde.
She must have stayed by me the whole night long.Hilde smiled softly in her sleep. Her dark curls brushed the nape of her neck and fell across her face, captivatingly. Duo let his gaze wander over her sweet face, her delicate frame, her dress…
Wow.She looked so amazing. Not that his Hilde didn’t look gorgeous all the time. But had tried not to think about that since Hilde was only a good friend and besides, she would never feel the same way about him. But now that he was allowing himself to really look at her…it suddenly registered.
She must have missed the Ambassador’s Ball. Just so she could take care of me.Duo felt extremely guilty. He knew that Hilde was looking forward to going to her first fancy party and he had ruined it with his rotten timing. Duo reached out a hand and caressed the softness of her cheek, regretfully.
"I’m sorry, Hildey."
Hilde’s eyes opened and she blinked up at him, sleepily.
"Duo. You’re awake."
Duo smiled.
"Yep."
Hilde seemed to become alert all at once and she reached a hand up to his forehead, testing for any signs of residual fever.
"How do you feel?"
Duo gently took her hand from his forehead and cradled it in his own.
"I’m fine, thanks to you. I’m really grateful Hilde."
Hilde blushed and she tried to retrieve her hand from Duo’s grasp.
"I didn’t do anything."
Duo reached out to cup her chin in his other hand. He brought her eyes up to meet his and peered into them, searchingly.
"You missed your big night. You stayed with me all night instead of leaving with Relena. You gave it up, just for me. I know how much you wanted to go to that ball, Hildey."
"No. I didn’t really want to go all that much," Hilde lied.
But her eyes filled with tears as she spoke and she avoided Duo’s gaze. Duo stared at her for a moment and then sighed. He pushed the covers aside and got out of the bed, teetering a moment on unsteady legs.
"What are you doing?" Hilde protested. "You should stay in bed. You might still be sick."
Duo ignored her and made his way over to the vanity. He saw the radio on her dresser and turned it on. Hilde stared at him in shock while her played with the dial, searching for something. Suddenly he turned the volume up and a haunting melody filled the room.
::She's like the wind through my tree
She rides the night next to me::
Duo turned to Hilde and stretched a hand out to her, bowing slightly at the waist.
"May I have this dance?"
Hilde stared at him for a minute, contemplating his sanity. Then she shrugged and held out her hand for Duo to capture in his own. He drew her closer, one hand on her waist and the other holding her hand in a gentle grip. He began to sway to the music, leading her in circles around the room in a slow waltz.
::She leads me through moonlight
Only to burn me with the sun::
The hell...?"Duo?"
Hilde’s eyes formed a question. Duo smiled and spun her in a tighter circle, bringing her hand up to rest on his shoulder.
::She's taken my heart
But she doesn't know what she's done::
Hilde decided sighed and decided that she should just go along with this. Duo might be feverish but he was a pretty good dancer. She could feel the sinewy muscles under the lightness of his shirt and a sudden desire for him flashed through her thoughts. Her breathing quickened slightly and Hilde could feel the beginnings of a blush begin to creep into her cheeks.
Shame on you for thinking something like that. He’s just trying to be nice because you missed the stupid ball. It doesn’t mean anything.
::Feel her breath on my face
Her body close to me::
Hilde rested her head on Duo’s shoulder and moved her hand around to caress the back of his neck. Duo gasped at the contact and pulled her tighter to him.
::Can't look in her eyes
She's out of my league::
What do you think you’re doing? She’s a friend. Just a friend. And even if there was a remote possibility that she could think of you as more than a friend it still wouldn’t work. You’re a killer. A murderer. Everyone around you dies. She’s an angel. A goddess. You don’t deserve someone like her. You’d better stop this now before you go too far.
::Just a fool to believe
I have anything she needs
She's like the wind…::
Duo drew back, suddenly and Hilde looked at him in confusion.
"Duo?"
His eyes flashed with pain.
"I’m sorry, Hilde. I can’t…"
He looked down at the floor.
Hilde’s eyes filled with tears and she shivered miserably.
"You don’t want me."
The statement was dull, flat. Duo looked up, startled. He saw her tears and was mystified at her emotion.
Is she crying…for me?::I look in the mirror and all I see
Is a young old man with only a dream::
Hilde hugged herself and backed away from him, slowly.
"I’ll leave you alone now."
Before she could turn to leave Duo caught her arms in a fierce grip.
"Hildey…"
::Am I just fooling myself
That she'll stop the pain::
She looked at him through a blurry veil of tears.
"What is it Duo? What do you want?" her voice broke with a sob. "For God’s sake just tell me what you want!"
::Living without her
I'd go insane::
Duo brought a hand up to brush away her tears. He bent his face slowly down to hers.
"I want…"
His eyes focused on her mouth and she waited, breathlessly.
"I want…"
His head dipped lower until his lips hovered just over hers.
"This," he whispered, before taking her mouth in a soft, moist kiss.
::Feel her breath on my face
Her body close to me
Can't look in her eyes
She's out of my league::
Hilde’s eyes widened and then shut tight as she moved closer to him, twining her fingers in his loosely tied braid. Duo deepened the kiss, slowly increasing the pressure until she parted her lips. Duo’s tongue flickered inside and began a deep, achingly sweet exploration of her mouth. His hands roved down over the smoothness of her back and caressed her buttocks in a possessive touch that made Hilde give out a deep, throaty cry of pleasure.
::Just a fool to believe
I have anything she needs
She's like the wind::
Duo broke the kiss reluctantly. He drew back to look into Hilde’s face. Her cheeks were flushed and her lips were parted and slightly swollen from his kiss. She was beautiful.
"Hildey…I—"
"Shh."
Hilde pressed a finger to Duo’s lips to quiet him.
"Don’t say a thing. Just kiss me again. Please, I need you."
::Feel your breath on my face
Your body close to me::
Duo was uncertain.
This can’t be real. I’m only dreaming. She couldn’t possibly want me."Are you sure?"
::Can't look in your eyes
You're out of my league::
Hilde’s eyes danced mischievously.
"Duo Maxwell if you don’t kiss me right now I’ll never make you another meal for as long as I live."
Duo grinned and lowered his lips to hers.
"Than I guess I have no choice."
His mouthed moved over hers once again in sensual exploration and she grasped his shoulders in wild abandon.
He let his hands travel to the back of her dress and slid the zipper down, slowly, allowing her time to protest if she wanted to.
She didn’t want to. Her hands were already fumbling with the buttons of his shirt, eager to get at the smooth, firm flesh. He lifted a hand to help her and soon the shirt was tossed impatiently to the ground. Duo finished with the zipper of her dress and it slid to the floor in a satiny waterfall of midnight blue. Hilde stood before him in just her panties and bra. He eyed her body appreciatively before picking her up and carrying her over to the bed.
::Just a fool to believe
(Just a fool to believe)
She's like the wind::
Hilde watched through heavy lidded eyes as Duo slid out of his pants and joined her on the bed. He ran his hands lightly over her body, stopping to cup her breasts. His thumb brushed her peaked nipples through the fabric and Hilde gasped and arched her body towards his hand. Duo grinned and removed the bra, quickly. He bent his head down over rose-hued tips and took one of them in his mouth, sending white-hot jolts of pleasure through Hilde’s body. She cried out at the sensation and tossed her head, exposing the softness of her throat. Duo continued his ministration, sucking and nibbling on the taut bud while his other hand traveled down to pull at Hilde’s panties. She lifted her hips and allowed him to slide the panties down over her legs and off. Then she gave and insistent tug on his boxers and they soon joined the panties on the floor. She looked at his hardness and swallowed, nervously.
He’s so big. How will he ever fit inside me?Duo saw her hesitation.
"Are you sure you want to do this?"
Hilde saw that he would stop if she asked him to and that thought only made her want him more.
"I’m sure. I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life. I want you Duo. I’ve always wanted you."
Duo smiled and then bent down to claim her lips once more, positioning himself between her legs waiting until she arched her hips to meet him before slowly pushing himself inside her. Hilde felt a brief pain, brief. And then there was nothing but a steady warmth. Duo gave her a minute to adjust to the throbbing thickness that she cradled inside her before rocking his hips against hers in a slow, passionate dance. She moved with him in rhythm to his thrusts and soon waves of creamy, dreamlike sensations hit her body and made her tremble against him. Patiently, he brought her to the brink of climax and she tightened around him in an explosive starburst of ecstasy. She screamed out his name and dug her nails into the flesh of his back. Watching her climax pushed Duo over the edge and he released his seed into her in sweet spasm after sweet spasm. Finally, exhausted, he lay his head down on the snowy pillows of her chest and she brushed back his bangs with her hand.
"Duo. That was wonderful. I never knew I could feel that way."
"I knew, Hildey. I’ve always known."
Hilde closed her eyes and leaned her head back on the bed pillows.
"I love you," she murmured.
Duo’s eyes widened and then he smiled and hugged Hilde tightly.
"I love you too, babe."
They fell asleep, smiling.
::She's like the wind::
