The Big Inevitable Gay/Straight Rant (with a little religion tossed in as well)
I am so tired of seeing stupid anti-yaoi fics that are just asking for flames! Arrgh!
People are always apprehensive when talking about social issues. Especially when you tackle the gay/straight issue, which really, shouldn't have to be an issue at all. I mean, we're all just people. And until you can convince me as to why I should worship a God who encourages people to hate another for having different preferences, you'll never be able to get me on the religious front.
Most people don't pay attention to the bible anyway. There are millions of rules we break every day like, eating the meat of cloven-hoofed animals or not bathing sixty times a day during our menstrual period and interacting with men. The Bible is a really nice group of stories with some good values and pieces of advice tossed in, but that’s all it is: stories. You can’t base your whole faith on one source alone.
Being openminded is like taking your faith and stretching it to include everything else in the world as well. For instance, I am a Christian. I believe that there is one God. That doesn’t mean that all these other religions are wrong for having many Gods. I believe that all these are representations of the same God. God is Allah, God is Vishnu, God is Mother Nature, and God is Zeus. Everything is aspects of God, or at least, that’s my view. You are entitled to your own opinion as well.
Besides, I expect that if there really is a heaven, everyone would be allowed in, not just those who've filled their daily boyscout quota or repented on their deathbeds. As for the whole to be gay or not to be issue, I’m not that worried about it. When I find someone I think I could love then I'll love them, whether or not it's a boy or girl. I can't say that I won't care what other people think but I won't let their opinions affect my choice in any way. When you get down to it, love is love, and you can no more help it if you're attracted to a rich guy or a poor guy, then if you're attracted to a man or a woman. Or both. In any case, I'll deal with it when I come to it. I’m too young yet to concern myself with these things.
The point of this rather scatterbrained rant was that we shouldn’t still be having this gay/straight debate. It’s been done. Get over it. Read what you like and don’t criticize someone else’s tastes.
Freedom of speech is fine. You can say whatever you want to say. But this isn’t a right. It’s a privilege. And many people abuse free speech by using their privilege to hurt others. Please let’s all be mature and remember the golden rule: If you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.
