Antifreeze and Aeroplanes

::I can feel your stare

I’m caught up in the after glare

Something tells me you’re not there::

"Can you at least tell me why?"

Duo looked at his friend’s puzzled face and decided that he might as well tell the truth. Quatre could probably tell when he was lying. Hell, anybody could tell when Duo was lying. He didn’t do it very well. I may run, I may hide, but I never tell a lie. What a crock THAT’S turned out to be.

"Duo?"

Quatre was still waiting for his answer. Duo sighed heavily and turned his face to the wall, not wanting to look into those reproachful blue orbs any longer. It could be worse, he mused, those could be Hilde’s reproachful eyes staring at you like that. Duo groaned at the thought and tried to bury himself deeper into the sheets of the hospital bed. Quatre heard the noise and became concerned.

"Are you all right? Do you want me to get the doctor?"

Duo sighed. "No, no. I’m fine. I’m just peachy."

Quatre regarded his friend sadly. "Duo, anyone who tells the love of his life that they’re through, OD’s on bad drugs and alcohol, and collapses in the park is NOT peachy."

"It was stupid. I know that. You don’t have to rub it in," Duo snarled.

"If you knew it was stupid then why did you do it?"

Duo kept silent, his eyes staring at some fixed point on the ceiling. Quatre stared at him for another few minutes before turning and leaving the room. Duo waited for him to leave before allowing the tears to wash his face. Boys don’t cry, he thought furiously to himself. But I don’t care anymore.

::Mindless and abused

You don’t know you’re losing you

Your everything has been misused::

Quatre closed his eyes and leaned against the wall outside of Duo’s room, trying to sort out the conflicting emotions he had felt from the braided pilot of the Deathscythe. There was anger, yes, and sadness. But there was also fear. Why was there fear? What are you afraid of, Duo? What do you see when you close your eyes?

"Quatre."

Quatre’s eyes snapped open in time to see Hilde walk down the hall towards him. Her eyes were red and her hair was messed. She didn’t even have a coat even though it had been colder than usual lately.

"Where’s Duo? Is he okay?"

Quatre forced himself to smile. "He’s fine. He’s resting at the moment."

"May I see him?"

Quatre looked away from her hopeful gaze.

"I don’t think that that’s such a good idea, right now."

Hilde’s face fell. "He doesn’t want to see me, does he?" she mumbled. "He hates me."

Quatre put an arm around her shoulders and she cried into his chest, clinging to the sleeve of his shirt.

"Shh," Quatre murmured. "I’m sure he’ll come around. He’s just confused right now. He still loves you. I know it."

"What happened to him, Quatre?"

Quatre sighed and led Hilde to the plastic chairs in the waiting room.

"You’d better sit down for this."

Hilde sat and fidgeted nervously with her hands. She was trembling. Quatre could see her shoulder’s shaking. Dammit, Duo. How could you do this to her? To yourself?

Quatre took a deep breath and decided to get this over with quickly.

"They found a powerful drug in Duo’s system. That mixed with the alcohol must have been enough to cause a major reaction in his body. He was unconscious when I found him. They had to pump his stomach. The doctors say that he was very lucky we got to him in time…"

Hilde stared at Quatre numbly. The words didn’t seem to register. Duo and drugs? But he would never do something like that. Then again…you thought that he would never turn to drink either.

"Hilde?"

Hilde felt a soft touch on her hand. She lifted her eyes to Quatre’s concerned face and tried to focus.

"Hilde, are you okay?"

Stupid question, Quatre berated himself. Of course she’s not okay.

Hilde blinked her eyes at him and opened her mouth, struggling to form the words.

"I just….don’t understand," she managed to choke out. "Why?"

"I don’t know."

Tears built up in Hilde’s eyes and started to stream down her face.

Quatre held out his arms and enfolded her in an awkward embrace. He could feel the sobs racking her body, every tremor, every tear leaving a wet trail down his back. He had never felt so utterly helpless in his life. What am I supposed to do? What the hell do I do?

::Can’t you see what I’m trying to say

Don’t you see that you’re in pain

You’re in pain

Can’t you see what I’m trying to say::

Duo was dreaming. He knew he was dreaming. There was no way that this could be real. For one thing, he was in the Deathscythe flying through space. He was not hurt in the least and, best of all, he did not feel like shit. It was…peaceful, yes peaceful to float around in space, just watching the earth turn below, not having to think or even feel. Duo contemplated staying here forever. But something changed. He found himself on the earth, fighting. He had to kill again. This was a war. Images flitted across his mind. The Deathscythe cutting through mobile suits, the Deathscythe destroying a base, people running, screaming, pleading. And Duo liked it, liked the sound of voices screaming, liked when they pleaded with him and he killed them anyway. He was impervious. He was Shinigami and no one could touch him. He watched gleefully as he sliced through millions and millions of people all the while screaming out his triumph so everyone could hear. And then it changed again. There were no more soldiers, no more people left to kill. He had destroyed it all and now he stood in a field thick with bodies. The bodies of soldiers, yes. But also the bodies of innocent men, women, and…children. Duo felt sick. He heard a voice say, "What’s wrong? Isn’t this what you wanted?"

"No. This isn’t what I wanted. This isn’t what I wanted at all."

"Too bad," the voice seemed to jeer at him. "This is what you’re gonna get."

::Antifreeze and aeroplanes

Killing you and killing me

I’ll tell you what

We could fly away

Antifreeze and aeroplanes::

"Excuse me."

Hilde looked up from Quatre’s shoulder to see the concerned face of a doctor staring back at her. She hastily pulled away from Quatre and wiped at her eyes.

"I’m sorry to intrude…"

"It’s all right," said Quatre. "Do you have any news about Duo’s condition?"

The doctor frowned. "We’ve run some blood tests. They’ve shown some rather interesting results. It seems that your friend there already had traces of a drug in his system. That plus the excessive amount of alcohol he’d ingested made his system shut down. The pills he took at the bar were only small doses of acetaminophen. Those alone wouldn’t have harmed him but when mixed with this other drug…"

Hilde felt the blood drain from her cheeks. Duo was already taking drugs? That’s impossible. How could I have not seen it?

Quatre swallowed hard, trying to take in this surprising bit of information. "Do you…know what kind of drug he was taking?"

::Before you know

You’re much too weak

To the point

The fall’s too steep::

The doctor’s frowned deepened. "That’s the puzzling part. Our test have shown that Duo must have injected himself with vasolanadrine (I made this up ^__^), a very rare and strong hallucinogen, designed to bring forth repressed memories or something like that. It was banned a long time ago and the only known sample that I’ve ever heard of is being kept in a research lab belonging to the Romefeller (sp?) Foundation."

"That’s it!" Quatre’s eyes grew wide and he leaped out of his seat. OZ. That’s why Duo’s been acting this way. It was because of OZ.

"What’s it?" Hilde was still confused.

Quatre turned to the doctor quickly and said, "Thank you for your help but could we have a minute alone?"

"Certainly," said the doctor. "I just go check on the patient for a while."

The doctor turned and went into Duo’s room, shutting the door behind him. Hilde grabbed onto Quatre’s sleeve.

"What is it?" she demanded. "Have you figured out something?"

Quatre sat back down and ran his fingers through his hair. "It all makes sense now. That’s why Duo’s been acting so strange."

Hilde resisted the urge to scream in frustration. "What makes sense? Quatre, talk to me!"

Quatre smiled at Hilde. "I’m sorry. You remember that Duo left on a mission last week, right?"

Hilde nodded, still puzzled.

"Well, he was captured for a few hours."

Hilde gasped. "I didn’t know! Why didn’t he tell me that?"

"We got him out before any damage was done…at least, we thought we did. They must have injected him with the drug to see how he’d handle it."

Yes, Hilde thought. That makes sense. But…

"Why would the drug affect him that much. I mean it’s only meant to bring back repressed memories, right?"

::It’s too late now

It’s too late now

You’re in too deep::

Quatre grew very serious. "Hilde, has Duo ever talked to you about his past?"

Hilde lowered her eyes to the floor. "No. Whenever I try to question him he laughs it off or tries to distract me. Why? Do you know what happened to him?"

"That’s something you should talk to Duo about. In the meantime, let’s just be glad that we know why Duo’s been so depressed lately."

"I guess so," mumbled Hilde. But does this change anything between us?

::Can’t you see what I’m trying to say

Can’t you see what I’m trying to say

Spread your wings and shed the pain::

Duo woke from his dream with a start. For a moment he had forgotten where he was and reached out for Hilde. When he found that she wasn’t lying there beside him he opened his eyes to the cheesy orange and green wallpaper of his hospital room. Duo sighed and turned over on his side as much as he could without disturbing the IV tube that hung down from his arm. I’ve got to get out of here.

::Spiral down now

Spiral down now, I’m so down now

Falling, falling…::

Suddenly Duo heard the door to his room creak open. He spoke without turning around.

"Go away, Quatre. I’m not in the mood for a lecture, okay?"

"Too bad. You’re gonna get one."

Hilde. That was Hilde.

Duo’s eyes widened at the familiar voice and he sat up quickly, causing all the blood to rush to his head.

"Lay back down. You’re not completely healed yet."

Duo quelled the urge to reach out to her and forced his voice to become cold.

"What are you doing here? I don’t want to see you. Just leave."

Hilde came over to the bed and sat down in one of the chairs beside it.

"I’m not leaving until I get some answers."

Duo snorted and turned his face away from her. Hilde took a deep breath and managed to smile at him.

"Don’t worry. I can wait all night."
