| Galaxy Fraulein Yuna (Ginga Ojousama Densetsu Yuna) ADV Films Lenght: 60 minutes English Dubbed Contains: 2 OVAs Score: 4 stars out of 5 Reviewed by: Assasin Zero Warnings: Some violence, lesbian themes, overall cuteness. Whats it all about?: Well, you see, you have this kawaii (cute) girl named Yuna. Your average anime heroine, shes a clumsy little blonde who has the ability to turn any foe into her best friend. A ray of sunshine in the lives of countless friends and allies, she is up there with the likes of Usagi (Sailor Moon) and Miaka (Fushigi Yugi). Living with her best friend Yuri without a worry in the world, you wouldnt guess that the number one fan of the local idol/TV superhero, Polylina, is in reality the so called Savior of the Light, defender of the galaxy. Yep, sporting a cool battle suit a la Izcelion, this babe kicks ass and doesnt take names. Maybe that is why the evil Fraulein D decided that in order to cover the galaxy in darkness, she must extinguish the brilliant light that is Yuna. Devising an evil plot that involves accusing our cute heroine of trying to take over the galaxy, the horrified Galactic Council decides to send their elite agent Saline to investigate. Disguised as an ordinary schoolgirl, will she prove the innocence of Yuna to the Galactic High Council or will she be the cause of her downfall? Need to watch the anime to find out. What did I thought about it?: Lets see; we got cute armor clad babes, cool action sequences, loads of humor, an evil Fraulein with two not-so-evil henchmen (or should I say henchwomen), a kawaii puppy, and even a touch of yuri (lesbian themes, not Yunas cute android friend and room mate). Did I enjoy Galaxy Fraulein Yuna OVAs 1 and 2? Damn right I did! Sporting above-average animation and a great cast of characters, Galaxy Fraulein Yuna easily became one of my favorite anime series the first time I watched it back when ADV was still releasing Devil Hunter Yohko and this was only available in subbed, 30 minute tapes that cost 30 bucks each. Finding the whole thing for a mere 15 bucks, I was more than happy when I bought this (there is a second set of OVAs, also available from ADV for the same low price). Now, why dont we talk about the characters. Yuna, the clumsy main character, is a kawaii babe that always has a smile on her face, and who is kind to everyone, even her enemies (shadows of Sailor Moons Usagi/Serena). Now, Yuna lives, apparently alone, in this big house with her weird best friend (and who knows what else ^_~), Yuri, an android girl with a big (and I mean big) appetite. Fighting alongside them are a group of girls who will, for the most part, remain nameless, all sporting cool armored suits. Rising among the cast of nameless extras, the idol/TV superhero, Polylina, stands as Yunas right hand man (girl?) and one of the most powerful fighters. Saline (the girl sent to investigate Yuna) is cast as your typical police type who believes in doing the right thing no matter what. Like all the girls in the series it seems, she also sports a cool armored suit and can kick mayor butt in battle. For evil characters, we have of course the evil Fraulein D, the big boss and number one evil character bent on ruling the galaxy. Cool, cruel, and extremely powerful, she looks like a futuristic version of Queen Beryl from Sailor Moon fame (as a matter of fact, this anime borrows a lot from Sailor Moon as well as other anime, so be on the lookout). Her right hand women are a couple of clumsy, yet cold and calculating in battle, girls, that you cant help but to like and root for, even if they are suppose to be the bad guys. All in all, the cast of characters is top notch, and even if they are not given a lot of depth or background, they are all likable enough for you to enjoy this awesome series (it seems this is Yunas third attempt at defending the universe, therefore the lack of proper character introduction since you start right in the middle of things; maybe the games upon which this anime series was based explain a little more). Now, what about the animation? Mmm, let see. It aint great, but it certainly is above average. The girls are all cute and well drawn and the battle scenes are just awesome. Lots of bang for your buck indeed. You get rockets, lasers, big ass explosions, destruction galore, mecha and powersuit battles. The works. Its all cool, and you get at least one mayor battle per OVA. The mechanical design are also very well done, specially the battle armors and Yunas mecha, Elner. All in all, the animation is top notch, and more than what youll expect for this kind of series. Now, what happened to that yuri you were mentioning earlier? Well, for the curious and shoujo ai fans (like myself) out there, Galaxy Fraulein Yuna is actually rather yuri-friendly. Yuna herself blushes a lot when Misaki (Salines alter ego as a school girl), stares lovingly at her and even has fantasies about the elite policewoman stripping for her while dozing off in class. Of course, our cute superheroine also has a crush on Polylina, the TV superhero and her right-hand woman in battle. Yep, our kawaii heroine is in reality a rather kinky lesbian babe. Watch out for the scene in the second OVA when Saline ties her up to bring her before the High Council and she believes it is some kinds of bondage game they are playing (she even says she has not done it like this before Oo;; Makes you wonder what she and Yuri do all alone at night ^_^). Speaking of Yuri, throughout the series, it is hinted that she and Yuna may be more than just best friends (in typical anime fashion, they are always fighting to hide their real feelings...again shadows of Sailor Moons Usagi and Rei). All in all, it is a sweet yuri side story. Now, final words. If you enjoyed Sailor Moon, Card Captor Sakura, and all those anime featuring cute magical girls fighting against evil, you will probably enjoy this. If you like your action with loads of humor and silly cuteness, you will also enjoy this. Shoujo ai fans, if this isnt already in your libraries, maybe its time to go to your nearest anime retailer and pick it up; its really good and for 15 bucks, you cant ask for more. For the ultra violence loving crowd who hate anything remotely kawaii, as well as those of you who actually want a plot with your anime, guess you better look elsewhere. Galaxy Fraulein Yuna is 60 minutes of fun. At the end, you will be left with either a smile on your face or a big frown. I was left smiling. Highly recommended. |
