BRUSSELS FIELD TRIP
The fourth week of the program takes place in Brussels, Belgium the capital of the European Union.  The itinerary and site visits change from year to year depending on availability of speakers. You will be given the itinerary and hotel information the week before and it is very important that you keep it as copies will not be made available once there. Last year, participants stayed in a hotel at the northern end of the city and either walked or took the subway to get to our destinations. Students made their own travel arrangements to Brussels and we all met at the hotel Monday evening that week and then left again Thursday afternoon.
This part of the program is not a trip associated with tourism. You will be listening to lectures from a variety of persons who work for the European Union or whose jobs deal with issues related to the EU. The program takes place in a business environment and participants should dress accordingly. Make sure you have pen and paper with you to take notes. At times, there were large chunks of time between the lectures. This might seem unorganized since the Americam way would be most likely to schedule visits back to back.
Prior to going to Brussels, do some research about what there is to see of interest in and around Brussels. For example, many students have come back from the nearby city of Bruges with great impressions. The downtown part of Brussels also offers some quaint scenes to take in. Getting around the city is  easy with the subway, but you should have an idea of where you want to visit before getting there. You can find some great ideas here.
Please take with you the copy of the 2005 schedule of the visits of the European institutions
that you will receive from your resident director.
