Psalm 2:8 – “Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.”

Many churches and their congregations come to dwell on the missions field and the missionaries around the world approximately a week per year.  In some churches, it could be a month.  During this time, they usher in an array of speakers, sprinkling in some missionaries and their captivating stories of living without running water, dealing with malaria, etc.  After these usually entertaining and often humorous sermons and epic stories, there’s a offering to help the missionaries continue their work.  And just as you walk out the door, Missions Week (or Missions Month for some of you) is officially over for another year.

But isn’t there more?  I mean, think about it.  Churches aren’t in the business to be fundraisers, they don’t just bring these guys in because they feel sorry for them.  And certainly those stories and sermons aren’t just what missionaries are all about – it goes deeper.

The fun stories we hear about are only the scratched on the surface.  Think about it for a moment.  What would cause a young person, with a promising career ahead of them and all the comforts of being at home lay it all down to fly one-way to a remote Third-World country on the other side of the world and preach with barely sufficient resources to live?

The live in the pain of missions.  They live in the pain of those who haven’t heard the Gospel and the free gift of salvation.  They live to seek God first and His Great Commission.  They have a longing in their hearts to reach nations, to transform lives, and to touch the world.  They cry out to God to deliver the masses and to move the hearts.  Missionaries know that they can live with only one thing in life, and that one thing is Jesus.

What about you?  Have you felt God’s hand moving you towards a short term mission project somewhere?

Not all of us are called to be missionaries, but we all equally have a hand in the field of missions; after all, we are the body of Christ.  But are you doing your part to help out your fellow brothers and sisters who are truly laboring for Christ?  Are you praying for the missionaries across the world?  Are you weeping for healing within our country as well as the countries around the world?  Are you reaping the harvest that has been set before each of us?  Are crying out with your heart to God, asking for the nations?
