Give Us Clean Hands

Psalm 24:3,4 – “Who may ascend the hill of the Lord?  Who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false.”

Purity is a subject often obscured by the world today.  We have ads for a foamy cleanse that leaves our faces pure and smooth, while another boasts the “purity” of an alcoholic beverage.  Home improvement stores offer their purest wood for sale while jewelers haggle over the purity of gold and silver.  It’s obvious that many people seek the “pure” things of the world, yet what about themselves?  Do they seek purity within their souls and their hearts?

E.M. Bounds writes: “Earnestness is good and impressive; genius is gifted and great.  Thought kindles and inspires, but it takes a divine endowment – a more powerful energy than earnestness, genius, or thought – to break the chains of sin.  It takes more to win estranged and depraved hearts to God, to repair the breaches, and to restore the Church to her old ways of purity and power.  Nothing but holy anointing can do this.”

Purity isn’t attained by our own perseverance or dedication.  It requires patience upon God to deliver us from temptation and evil.  It requires the Holy Spirit working within out lives and our own willingness to listen and to obey what God’s will is.

Josh Harris writes “If we want to lead pure lives, then we must realize that purity does not happen by accident, [rather] we have to understand purity as a pursuit of righteousness.  The path you take with your feet should never contradict the conviction of your heart.“

Indeed, your pursuits in life often indicate your walk with Christ.  So take some time today to quiet yourself before the Lord.  Ask Him to take a look at your heart and purify it once again.  Let Him look at your hands and wash them clean with Christ’s blood.  And search for His glory amongst the cleansing and healing.

Josh Harris sums it up best when he says: “What will it take for us to see the beauty of purity?  Purity is the entrance to the splendor of God’s creation.”

Song Lyrics:
We bow our hearts, we bend our knees
O Spirit come make us humble
We turn our eyes from evil things
O Lord we cast down our idols

CHORUS:
Give us clean hands, give us pure hearts
Let us not lift our souls to another
Give us clean hands, give us pure hearts
Let us not lift our souls to another

O God let us be a generation that seeks
that seeks your face O God of Jacob
O God let us be a generation that seeks
that seeks your face O God of Jacob
