John 8:12-30
“The Validity of Jesus’ Testimony”

Imagine a courtroom with a pack of lawyers furiously interrogates a witness about who he truly is.  The witness seems calm, cool, and collected as he answers each question.  There is a sense of power in his words, something about his demeanor that makes you feel like you can trust him and his testimony.  There is something about the words the witness speaks that makes you believe that every single sentence is the truth and nothing less.

Flip back the clock a couple of thousand years and imagine yourself in temple courts.  You are surrounded by majestic views with columns rising like glorious towers and beautiful trimmings everywhere you look.  You look across the courts and find a crowd of people playing spectators to a group of Pharisees and Jesus.  It is the Pharisees who are the pack of confused lawyers and Jesus the witness.

Yet Jesus is unique in that He is His own witness and even claims to be a “judge” who’s decisions are right because they fall in line with the Father’s will.  In its very essence, Jesus is claiming to be God in these verses.  Think about it – can anyone else truly be his/her own witness without having the testimony questioned?  Yet Jesus could and as he spoke “many put their faith in him” (verse 30), signifying not only the candor or Jesus’ words but also the power behind them.

So look at your own life.  Do you believe Jesus’ testimony and who He claims to be?  Can you sense the power behind God’s word (the Holy Bible) to you today?

Jesus says in verse 12 “I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”  Where are you standing, the darkness (sinful nature) or light (purity)?  Do you have the light of life?
