John 7:37-44 “Streams of Living Water”

Take some time to picture a couple of hikers lost in a wooded area.  Both hikers have traveled for a few days in the woods.  However, this isn’t like any forest they have hiked through before.  The thing that makes this forest unique is that there are hardly any sources of water to replenish either hiker’s drinking source, to bathe in, etc.  Their canteens ran out hours ago and both hikers have agreed to split up and are scrambling to find the nearest water source.

The first hiker stumbles upon a rather wimpy creek, dribbling only muddy drops of water down a slope.  With great difficulty and after a long effort hiker #1 finally has cupped a mouthful of water.  The second hiker, meanwhile, discovers a huge oasis in the middle of nowhere with sparkling, crystal clear water flowing smoothly with ease.  It only takes a few seconds to quench his thirst and a few more to dive in and feel refreshed and clean.

While hiker would you want to be?  While most people, possibly all, would choose the second one, the question that lies in this passage isn’t which hiker you’d prefer to be, but rather which stream of water would you rather like to be – somewhat lukewarm and not at all inviting like the dribbling creek or welcoming and refreshing like the crystal river?

Jesus said that whoever believed in Him “streams of living water will flow within him.”  The stream is a reference to the Holy Spirit.  You are the source of water to the hikers, the lost of the world.  As Christians who believe, we are to be filled with the Holy Spirit to be able to provide something refreshing and cleansing to those seeking something to soothe the thirst of their souls.

So what do you want to flow from within you – a creek of muddy drips or streams of living water?
