John 20:24-31 “Believe the Unbelievable”

Besides the Halloween costumes and the big screen, how often do you see dead people walking?  Not very, huh?  Think how Thomas must have felt when he saw Jesus walking around.  While Thomas is often singled out as “the doubter,” all the disciples had some difficulty believing the resurrection of Jesus.  For some, it was the ability to see Christ before they believed.  Some needed to touch Him to confirm his reality.  Yet others still believed without any immediate evidence.

Whenever I read these verses, I always think about Steven Curtis Chapman’s song Great Expectations.  The chorus reads something like this:

        Believe the unbelievable

Receive the inconceivable
And see beyond my wildest imagination
Lord, I come with great expectations

Some dared to believe that Christ was risen even though they didn’t have firsthand proof.  They didn’t need direct evidence; they had a strong enough faith to know that Jesus had power over death.  He had already shown this power back when He raised Lazarus from the dead (John 11).

So look at your own faith.  What kind is it?  Is it a faith built upon something you were told to believe?  Is it a childlike faith, sort of blind and just following someone else’s guide?  Instead of faith based on what we don’t seem to understand, base your faith on what you believe to be true against what the Bible says.  If we had a faith of fidelity in God, we can not only believe the unbelievable, but also to receive the inconceivable, the gift of eternal life in heaven.

Do you come to the Lord everyday with great expectations in yourself and what you can do?  Do you have a faith that is able to believe the “unbelievable?”
