John 16:5-16 “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye”

It’s hard to deal with departures and good-byes of close ones.  On the movie screen, there are tearful eyes and melancholy tones.  For big shots retiring long speeches summarizing their time and works are not uncommon.  To a college graduate stepping foot once last time on campus before heading out into the workplace, emotional times are brought back.  Often items of personal sentiment are given as parting gifts.  No matter how it’s done, fond memories emerge from the heart.

The disciples were the same way with Jesus.  Here, Jesus is giving what is basically a farewell speech.   But while there were probably a few weepy faces, Jesus promised to send someone else who would basically take His place and continue on the will of God.  Jesus’ parting gift to humanity was the Holy Spirit – “the Spirit of truth…will guide you into all truth.” (verse 13)

In the future, when saying your good-byes and parting from close friends and family, remember the mighty Counselor and the hope that you will meet them all again, together in heaven.
