John 10:1-21 “Life to the Fullest”

What does it mean to live life to the fullest?  Who can give such a life?  Sometimes, people view living life to the fullest as a weekend trip to Walt Disney World.  For others, it’s a thrilling sky dive.  Yet for others still, they think of it as partying with the masses.  But what kind of life to the fullest does the Bible talk about?

Often, Christians are given the image that they are boring and almost comatose in what they do for fun.  Non-Christians view Christians as people who are trying to spoil their fun or maybe as people who live to too many rules and guidelines on a God they don’t seem to be able to understand or comprehend.  It’s almost like the confused mass you can read about in the last two verses.  Does any of this sound familiar?  Sometimes feel the same way?  Well you can change that image.

It’s important to key in on verse 10 here – “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

We see that Christ didn’t come to stifle us with rules and regulations, but rather free us.  The reason Christ came to earth and died on that cross was to free us from the horrors of sin, an eternal damnation.  Christ came to free us from our sinful nature and its bondages (you can read more in Romans 6:1-14 and Galatians 5:1-14) so that we may have life, an eternal life in heaven.

Think about it.  People who live in sin often are miserable in the end.  Sure it may provide happiness at first, but it doesn’t provide an everlasting joy.  Only God can give that to you.  With Christ, you can live a life with joy, a good feeling that you know you are living to the fullest.

We are the sheep.  The shepherd has already come and given us life, to the point of laying His life down (verses 17, 18).  Are you going to follow the Good Shepherd?  It is in Him that you can live out loud.  Jesus was always ready for a good wholesome party – are you?
