| TASKS: You MUST do all three of the following tasks. 1. Complete a timeline of the major events in Chinese history from 1830 to 1999. Use the supplied websites as sources and check the rubric in your handout. 2. Complete the 2 (two) maps included in your packet. The instructions are on the back of the map. Use the supplied websites for the information and see the included rubric for grading criteria. 3. | TASKS (Cont.). You must also choose three of the following activities. N.B. If you choose #3 you may not choose #4 or vise versa. 1. Pretend you are the director/actor in a documentary film company. You are going over to China to talk to "people on the street" about the effects of the Opium Wars and Euroean Imperialism. You should focus on the changes that occured before, during, and especially after the involvement of Europeans in China. (You may work in groups of 3 or 4 for this activity only!) Please hand in a completed viedo tape to be viewed by the classs and a typed transcript of you r "broadcast." See rubric in your packet for grading. 2. Write a newspaper or agazine that details the events of the Opium Wars and the expanded involvement of Europe in Asia. This should be like a "Year in Pictures," or a commemorative/anniversary type issue. You should inclued: "interviews," news articles, political cartoons, advertisments, and other materials of your choice that complete a magazine or a newspaper. Again, see the rubric in you packet for grading. 3. Create a diary that includes a minimum of 14 entries detailing you life and/or experiences during the height of British involvement in China. These entries need not be sequential, you may jump around in time as long as you go forwars. You may NOT be an opium addict, but you may be related to an addict. Discuss the important Political, Economic, Social, and Military issues that are going on during this time. Don't forget to tell how life has changed for you. (See Rubric) 4. Pretend you are an elderly person who survived the Opium Wars and European Imperialism. You know that your time here may be limited and you want to tell your family the story of you r life. You decide that you want to do either a video diary, audio diary, or short memoir (this is your choice, choose the one that best suits you). Talk about the changes that have occurred during your lifetime. (You were born in 1815 and it is now 1905). This needs to be a narrative. You're telling a story to young people. (See Rubric) 5. You are an artist. You have lived through the changes that have occurred in China. You want to show the world what China was like before, during, and after the imperialists came. Please create a triptych showing these three scenes. It may be drawn, painted, or built. You should include a shor description of what each scene is. (See Rubric) 6. You are Queen Victoria, Empress of all the British Empire. You have just received a letter form Lin Zexu, a Chinese Government official, regarding the importation and sale of Opium in China by British tradesmen. Please respond to this letter in a way that you think Queen Victoria would have. (See Rubric) |
