Production practises and information

Breeding at the beginning of September for February lambs. Lambs left on ewes till sold. This will likely change if we increase flock size

and then we will wean and feed lambs to desired weight.

Marketing Strategy

In April and May 40 to 50 lb. lambs are sold at the farm gate( orders of ten or more only) the balance are shipped to Cookstown at

greater weight that is determined by condition of pasture and feed availability.

Feeding and Nutrition

Ewes are on pasture until depleted ( at present they are on very old and poor pasture) and are then fed hay in round bales by way of

skidsteer. One third of the bale is unwound in the yard and the balance of each bale placed in round bale feeders. They get grain

(barley, oats, whole corn) for flushing and then varying amounts till about mid March. All grain is fed whole.

One or two specific issues you have faced in your flock and your solutions

Growing from 40 to 200 ewes presented a grain feeding problem which was solved with a 120 foot raised feed trough outside and

troughs along the inside pens. This keeps the ewes on their own side allowing us to set out the pails without ewes underfoot.
