OPEN SOURCE MOVEMENT
INDIA - INTRODUCTION Open Source Movement India is a group of people
aiming to contribute towards employment growth & economic development of
India via increasing the IT market share of India from 5% to over 50%. Achieving this would be nothing short of bringing about a revolution in the country. We
have several ideas which are listed below which can help bring about this revolution.
Currently we are only an advocacy group and are not involved in implementation at all.
We spread the word to the right people and expect them to take advantage of the
opportunity.
Open Source This is the idea on basis of
which this group was founded and hence the name of the group. We strongly believe
that this small and simple idea can be converted into a revolution with little support
from each one of us.
There is an noticeable increase in use of open source software in
the industry these days. We don't think we need to prove that point. The idea is if we can train students at an early age to join this phenomenon then India can
be a leading player in the open source software revolution. Extremely large knowledge
base of open source software will ensure our dominance in the open source area and
will ultimately ensure your position as the market leader of the IT
industry. Ultimate aim is to enroll one million school children in the open source communities as active contributors. Make it the next "In" thing of the schools and colleges.
Strategy 1) Spread the word and
encourage every body in the age of 12 years to 20 years to join the open source
software sites as developers and start contributing. 2) Explain and market the
concept to the people who can make a difference. eg. Govt. Officials, School and
college teaching staff, Voluntary organizations, Industry bodies like FICCI,
NASSCOM etc. We all have contacts!!!
3) Donate in terms of time and
money to the schools and colleges which you studied in to start programs and
encourage students to join open source revolution. 4) You must be getting at least
1 request a week from aspiring IT professionals for guidance. Show them this huge
pool of possibilities and ask them to explore the product of their choice and start
contributing in it. 5) Get Open Source Software introduced as a teaching module in NIIT,
SSI, Aptech, BITS and other private coaching classes. Once one of the big
computer training institutes introduce Open Source Software as formal teaching
modules, the competitors will automatically pick up. 6) Get press coverage to
spread the message
Advantages Students need not search for
projects. Those who do not get into high flying summer jobs can still do cool stuff at
home. 2) Students can get in touch with the international community and get good
exposure at an early age and also can build international contacts. 3) Students can get
practical experience in the most cutting edge technology without stepping out of the
college lab. 4) It stimulates innovation. Some of these youngsters will create new open source products. Some of these kids will create new companies using open
source products. Possibilities of choice and opportunities in this area are
endless. 5) Students can be very sure of a very rewarding career when they come to the job market.
One Man
Enterprise Entrepreneurship is the undoubted leading contributor
towards employment and economic growth of any country in the world. Here are some ideas for individuals having built specialized knowledge to slowly begin
their own enterprise.
1) Become and active member of support forums(http://www.experts-exchange.com/) and provide your expertise to solve
problems. This allows individuals to build a brand for themselves over a period of
time. It is recommended to use the same id on different website. Select an id which is
so unique that you would be able to get it on all websites.
2) Start your own
business through free lancing for money on websites like http://www.rentacoder.com/
There are hundreds of individuals in India earning upwards of 10 lacs per annum just
through these websites.
Large
Enterprise Large enterprises these days are stronger than the
governments and hence have more influence on development of the country then the
government. We try to spread the idea for the organization (with greater than 100
employees) to setup small shops in rural areas. This would allow them to keep their costs low. This will contribute towards the economic development of
the rural areas. The Telecom infrastructure in the country has made it possible for
organizations to be able to setup shops in rural areas and still be connected extremely
well to the rest of the world.
