Mercury is the closest of all the planets to
the Sun. It orbits the Sun in 83 days, making it the
shortest year of all!! Due to it's close proximity to the
Sun, which represents (metaphysically) the Ego, the identity
or the center of the personality, Mercury therefore represents
the Intellect, the lower mind, cognitive ability and the
ability to communicate thoughts and ideas verbally to others.
With the cadeuceus, or the Staff of Thoth, he is associated with many healing arts. The two serpents are the serpents of knowledge. This symbol is well-known in modern day medicine. Even as the fast-moving liquid metal element, mercury is often referred to as "quicksilver," to allude to the lightning-fast speed of Mercury.
In mythology, Mercury is the fleet-footed
messenger of the gods, who has wings on his feet, in anticipation of the hasty retreat often necessary after bad news is delivered! He is well-known as a trickster, though he teaches the lessons of the crossroads.
In the ancient Egyptian mythos, Anubis is the jackal-headed son of Nephthys who escorts the soul through the Underworld, the "opener of ways" or the guide.
