| I bow to Oshun ... There is no place where it is not known that Oshun is as powerful as a king She dances and takes the crown She dances without asking ... She arrives and trouble is appeased She shakes her bracelets to come to dance She dances in the depths of richness The water sounds like the bracelets of Oshun We call her and she answers with wisdom She can do what the doctor can't The Goddess who heals with cold water We can stay in the world without fear. Lovingly, with laughter and joy Oshun calls us to The Dance ... - Yoruba praise song to Oshun |

Oshun (pronounced like ocean) is a river that flows out of the depths of West Africa. In Oshun's water flow the music, songs, dances, images and ideas that give definition to our relationship to the universe. Oshun's role is to conger the artistry and magic that feeds our dreams and kindles the imagination. Many people believe that the spirit of the Goddess Oshun flows within this river. Oshun is the Yoruba Orisha (Goddess/Deity) of the river, brooks, streams and lakes. She is properly called an Orisha and is a member of the Yorba Pantheon. She is often likened to the Goddess Aphrodite and holds a great love for beauty and all things sensual. She is the Patroness of love, beauty, imagination, sensuality, creativity, the arts, gold, healing and childbirth. As the Celestial Mermaid, Oshun is said to be the Mother of all waters both on earth and in the heavens. She is held to be the youngest of all the Orisha's but retains the title of Iyalode which means "Great Queen". She is described as the darling of the Pantheon and despite her "youth", she is possibly among the wisest. She is completely self-contained, self-aware and lovingly self conscious of her natural erotic beauty as she glows in the moons silvery romantic light. She is a great giver, but Oshun has her darker side as well. She can be extremely difficult to appease once her sweet temperament has been disabused, and just like a flowing, peaceful river can turn ugly and destructive when angered. Reputed moodiness aside, her energies are delightful and refreshing and she has an aura of joyousness. She proves to be a civilizing influence, teaching us the wisdom of tempering blunt speech with diplomacy. She gently chides us for being too serious and not making enough time for play. Oshun teaches us to take risks, there is a time for silence and a time for speaking out, a time for contemplation and a time for action. |

| Her waters dance sinuously through the countryside, She adorms herself with bangly stone bracelets, the beautiful clothing of the landscape, the perfumes of the wildflowers. We learn her sensuous movements by watching the river flow and sway with the landscape, She calls to us and whispers the secrets of deep, dusky sensual pleasure and liquid eroticism. |
