PIE Meeting
June 5, 2001
Meeting was called to order at roughly 8:02, with few members present. Sunny weather and baseball games were making many "fashionably late", and by the end of the meeting, 13 were in attendance.
Mary Elmore gave a financial report. Despite our difficulties amending the budget mid-year, the teachers had been very helpful and we are a mere $4 over our budget! Mary was also asked to evaluate our current status and reported that the account was currently at $3797.76. $1800 was already allocated for expenditures this year, and could not be touched, leaving approximately $1600 to use up by the end of the year and prepare for next year. Anticipating a $2500 return on Cash Back for Schools (YAHOO! for Rachel!) , as well as the $500 to be awarded to PIE by Ocean Shores IGA's "Together, we CAN!" at the Talent Show on Thursday, that left $4600 to end the year.
It was discussed how much we should start the new year with. It was decided that $200-$300 would be adequate, but $500 was decided on, to be on the safe side, leaving $4100.
Dina Davis asked for a budget of $150 for an end of the year project for the teachers. Jody Cadle moved to budget this amount, and Vonnie Hammack seconded the motion. It was passed by a unanimous vote. This left $3950.
Although the teachers had submitted some "wish list" items, Ms Ellingson asked that we use our money to purchase something on a larger scale, such as equipment for the computer lab or library instead of filling smaller wishes that might be funded by the school district. Jody Cadle agreed, noting that as parents, we can donate paper or other small items, but a computer would be a more significant donation. Dina Davis moved that we commit to buying a computer for the library, and Mike Barbero seconded the motion. Jody Cadle moved that we allocate $2000 to this end, and Vonnie Hammack seconded the motion. Both were passed unanimously, and Ms Ellingson beamed. This left $1950.
Vonnie Hammack then moved that we allocate $1000 for 10 unicycles, as requested by Ms Bjerke for a Physical Education program. Diana Fulbright seconded the motion. Discussion ensued regarding the safety of the program (Diana Fulbright suggested that notes be sent home to ask the parents to send a helmet to school to protect the child's head, and it was agreed that we did not want to share these items.), the need for the program (Deana Schlauch talked about the benefits of coordination, brain function, and balance that the program facilitates), and storage (Ms B could store the items at the High School if necessary, but perhaps onsite at the Elementary School.) The motion was submitted to be contingent on two things: 1) Adequate storage 2) Receipt of the $2500 prize from Cash Back for Schools. This passed with a rather disorganized unanimous vote. This left $950.
Dina Davis reported on the Basket Bingo. Turnout was GREAT, and everyone had a very good time. Concessions appeared to be a wash, although we still have a supply of cheese sauce and chili for another event. The Bingo brought in $789, and expenses were only $65, making it a successful fundraiser. The teachers were to be commended for the wonderful basket items, and Mary Ann Ellingson of Ocean Shores IGA, who put together the baskets in an afternoon, as well.
Cash Back for Schools is our big success story, as first year, we are in a solid second place. This would award us $2500! We currently had 83,092.00 , with first place at $130,000 and third at $81,000. (this being Washington School, which pleases Ms Ellingson! Her goal for this year was to place above her old school) Having parents and supporters sign up for the Mallibu Plus program was a big factor. Mrs Villar signed up some 20 people, giving us a credit for $250 each!
Talent Show is well organized for Thursday, but volunteers were needed to help with raffle, auctions, etc. The community had been very generous in giving items for the Silent Auction.
Playground Fund now stands at just over $2000, but this should be used up by the basketball hoops that have been ordered.
Diana Fulbright reported that the Penny Playground Fund cans needed to be removed, at least for the summer, from local businesses. Businesses are concerned that the security on these is lax, that no one is picking them up, and that only locals are donating to the cans. It was decided to pull these at least temporarily.
Perpetual Motion, the assembly arranged by Ms Ellingson and funded by PIE, will take place June 19th.
Boxtops for Education was discussed. These accumulate until we spend them in a catalog. Kristen Hieronymous indicated that in the past, the decision was left to the children, perhaps ASB could decide. It was mentioned that Safeway gives us a voucher for 2000 labels a year. (Ocean Shores IGA employee Jody Cadle made a mental note to push Campbell's Soup Reps for the same at Ocean Shores IGA!)
Deana Schlauch and Daniella Werner then bid us all adieu, and handed the official books over to Dina Davis, our president for 2001-2002!
Mr Barbero thanked the group for a successful year and our constant support, which motived and helped the teachers throughout the year. He then handed out beautiful handmade stained glass tulips to all in attendance. They were truly incredible, and worth putting all of the effort in this year! (Thank you, Mr Barbero!)
Until September, we are officially DONE!
