Kirk Smith Named Security Chief of 75th Academy Awards Beverly Hills, CA - Kirk Smith, a Los Angeles Police Department sergeant, will serve as traffic and security chief for the 75th Academy Awards, his third year in the post. Smith, who will work the telecast while on leave from the LAPD, will coordinate all police, fire, traffic control and private security activities associated with the Academy Awards ceremony. The 75th Academy Awards will mark the 15th ceremony at which Smith has worked in either an on-duty or off-duty capacity. "In terms of security, the Academy's main priority is the safety of our guests," said Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Frank Pierson. "As a 15-year veteran of the show, we trust Smith to once again provide a safe environment for everyone attending." Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2002 will be presented on Sunday, March 23, 2003, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland and televised live by the ABC Television Network beginning at 5:30 p.m. PST.
