I want to begin with the unappreciated categories. They never get any credit.
-Costume Design-
The Contenders
Ann Roth - Cold Mountain
I was always reluctant to give Cold Mountain any sort of attention, but the fact is, Ann Roth's work is consistently tasteful and worthy of acclaim. Her costumes are more a display in accuracy and character than in flashiness.

Noteworthy Works:
The Hours
The Talented Mr. Ripley (winner)
The English Patient
The Birdcage
Colleen Atwood - Big Fish
She is amazing, to say the least. What I've seen already is enough to consider a win. Her brand of restrained quirkiness blends perfectly with that Burton mystique.

Noteworthy Works:
Chicago (winner)
Sleepy Hollow
Beloved
Ed Wood
Little Women
Ngila Dickson - The Last Samurai
No offense to Ms. Dickson, but let's hope she's only nominated once this year. If you don't know, her work can be seen in Lord of the Rings. I'll tell you this: she's come a long way since the days of Xena:Warrior Princess, and I believe her work in Samurai is outstanding.

Noteworthy Works:
Lord of the Rings
Heavenly Creatures
Daniel Orlandi - Down With Love
I have never seen costumes so killer as these. Seriously. If that crappy "Affair of the Necklace" movie can get nominated, then damn the equally crappy box office of Down With Love! Better this be nominated than Seabiscuit or some standard shite like that.

Noteworthy Works:
none, sadly...but why can't the Hilary Swank/Halle Berry phenomenon apply to costume designers as well? You call Karate Kid 2 notable?! Hell no!
Wendy Stites - Master and Commander
Accurate? Yes. Interesting? Meh. I have mixed feelings as to whether historical uniform recreations count as designs.

Noteworthy Works:
The Truman Show
Janet Patterson - Peter Pan
I'm hoping this is a good movie, and if it is, I expect some recognition for the art department. It certainly looks pretty, and turn-of-the-century costume is always a goldmine for awards.

Noteworthy Works:
Oscar and Lucinda
The Piano
Portrait of a Lady

And I'm spent. Here are some other potentials:
Return of the King
Sylvia
Mona Lisa Smile
The Missing
More later! (Art Direction, acting, etc.)
