"Uncle Oscar" as all affectionately knew him, was a true pioneer of the NYC Taxicab Industry. His contributions to the industry lasted over 60 years. He founded the Amalgamated Credit Union and Oscar Katz Brokerage, and also served for 15 years as a Board Member of Melrose Credit Union. He recommended more members to join the Melrose Credit Union than any other person. He was also known as "Mr. Taxi", and coined the phrase "Black Car". Uncle Oscar helped thousands of individuals to become medallion taxi owners. No one has helped more taxi drivers realize the American dream and become business owners than Oscar Katz. His honesty and integrity in the industry was very well known.
He was a lifelong Queens resident. He was in the first graduating class of St. Johns University Law School, and was close with many local judges, attorneys and politicians throughout his lifetime. As an attorney, he served as a member of the Character and Fitness Committee of the NYS Bar Association for close to 40 years.
He supported many charities, and served as a Director on many of their Boards, including: Queens Cerebral Palsy, Long Island Jewish Hospital, and Queens Symphony Orchestra. He participated in many groundbreaking ceremonies at LIJ Hospital since the early 1960's.
His hobbies included ice skating, fishing, and working. Until just a few weeks ago, he rarely missed a day's work and was often seen taking work home. Oscar's Friday night dinners at the Pastrami King were legendary. If you were fortunate enough to be invited, as many, many people were, you were treated like royalty that night. To share a glass of Jack Daniels with an orange slice together with him was a great way to spend a Friday night.
Oscar is survived by his Lady Friend of 47 years, a Brother in Florida, Nephews, and a Niece. Heartfelt sympathy goes out to all his family and friends.
His Memory Will Live on Forever.
