Mercy
I gave Mercy some all-natural vanilla ice cream on Sunday morning.  She likes it a lot.  I gave her some apple sauce on Friday night, and she liked that too.  Last Thursday, I started feeding her four times a day.  But on Saturday, I reduced her food amount to one can of wet food mixed with three cups of dry food, and she's now fed only twice a day.  She also loves the Natural Balance Turkey formula food roll that we got at Petco on Saturday.
After we came back from the walk, I gave Mercy another bath.  She got a lot of dust on her (from the construction sites on campus).  After the bath, when I first turned on the blow dryer, she wanted to get away, but settled down a little when she realized that warm air comes out of the noisy thing (I didn't blow dry her last Sunday when I gave her a bath).  She was a little scared when I tried to clean her ears, but settled down after five minutes.  Here she is in the picture, cooling down in the crate and feeling very sleepy, as I was getting ready to go to school to use the internet.

Mercy is not a velcro dog like Penelope was, at least not so far.  The first few days, she was just interested in whether or not I was in or outside of the apartment.  Since Friday, she would follow me a little to see where I am in the apartment, but still not follow me from room to room.
On Tuesday she goes in for her treatment, and I would like to go see her twice a day.  I'm a little nervous about it, but I'm sure Mercy will be okay.  Just that I think I will miss her a little.  Mercy and Anastasia are getting along pretty well.  But Mercy still comes over to sniff Anastasia when I hold the cat.  I think Mercy gets a little jealous when I pet the cat.  Also Anastasia started feeling comfortable enough that she started playing with her toys in front of Mercy.  And all that cat action just drives Mercy crazy!  But otherwise they leave each other alone.

Anastasia likes to sleep in the dogs bed, and she even slept in the crate and played with Mercys lamb toy!
Mercy chewing on the lamb ear that we got at Petco.  She started chewing the dog walk in the living room, so I quickly gave her the lamb ear to chew on.  She did chew a small piece off the dog walk.  But I'm not the home improvement type, so I have no idea how to refinish the wood, so I just glued the piece back on.  Also I tried to get her to walk on the dog walk, but Mercy didn't really want to do it.  I think she was a little scared because she had no idea what I was making her do.  But maybe we can try it out again when she comes back from her heartworm treatment.
Mercy would scratch her bed sometimes.  Like she's digging.  Penelope did it too.  I read that it's their way of rearranging the bedding.  Chris said her Springer Callie digs her bedding too to try to bury her Greenies.  Mercy now would automatically sit by the door when I take her leash off the hook.  And she doesn't get up until I open the door and tell her "Okay".  On Monday morning, I let Mercy go leash free in the apartment's tennis court.  The first time Penelope and Dudley went leash free, they stayed pretty close to me.  But not Mercy.  She sniffed all around the court.  I hope she stays this way after she gets back from her heartworm treatment.  On Monday night when I woke up after falling asleep watching TV, I thought the furry one next to my face was Mercy.  But after I felt it, I knew it was Anastasia.  Then I felt another furry thing next to my leg.  That was Mercy.  So they were both sleeping next to me.  It felt so nice to have both of them sleeping peacefully on the bed with me.
Monday, September 6, 2004, Labor Day
On Monday afternoon, I took Mercy with me to the laundromat, which is near campus.  I thought I could walk her around campus when I was waiting for the clothes to dry.  When I left her in the car alone for the first time (it was raining, no sun, so the temperature wasn't warm), she got really scared.  She pretty much jumped over all the inside of the car, and when I came out, Mercy was in Anastasia's car seat in the front passenger seat (she squeezed as much as she can get herself into the little car seat).  But the second and third time I went inside the laundromat, she just sat up in the backseat.  I think she realized that I would come back.  We tried to walk around when I was waiting for the dryer, but it kept raining, so we only walked around for ten minutes.  I also washed the dog toys and dog bed covers.  When we got home, I put all the toys except Barney back in the toy basket.  But Mercy thought about it, and got the toys out one by one, and put them in her bed.  I gave her a Nylabone to chew on, but she wasn't very interested in it.  She seems to prefer soft, furry toys to chew on.  Monday night I was brushing my teeth, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw Mercy carrying something cream-colored and furry from the bedroom into the living room.  At first I thought she was carrying Anastasia, but that can't be possible.  When I went to the living room, Mercy was licking my Himalayan cat stuffed animal that I got from Maine!  So I took it away from her.  Then ten minutes later, I saw her chewing on one of my Springer stuffed animals!  I didn't take the Springers away earlier because I thought she was only interested in the stuffed cat because it was in the front of the display.  But it seems like she likes stuffed animals in general.  So I put all the Springer and color-point cat stuffed animals away.
