| Last night when I was feeding Jake dog biscuits, Anastasia came over to sniff them. Jake let out this yelp. It wasn't a bark and it wasn't a growl. It was the first time that Jake has acknowledged Anastasia's presence. Jake was tired after dinner and went to sleep. I think the campus walk did the trick. This morning I took him to the vet. They said he now weighs 53 lbs. I think he might've lost 2 lbs in the past 10 days. He's still not eating that much, only about 3 cups of food per day. The vet looked at his incision site, and she said everything looks fine, except his scrotum is still a little bruised, but it's not abnormal for Jake because he got neutered relatively late in life. And she said there are no stitches to be taken out. When I took him out potty right before I left for school this morning, he made solid poop, first time he's been with me! He hadn't pooped in the last 48 hours. I think now he's bowel movement has returned to normal, he'll start gaining weight. Jake chewing on a Bully Stix that we got from Petco. |

| Friday, July 8, 2005 Jake just loves some of his toys. On Wednesday night, he held the blue fish toy in his mouth for over an hour because Anastasia was walking around in the living room, and Jake was guarding the toy. Then he decided to pull out the toys from the toy box one by one and placed them on his bed. I guess he was guarding them too. When I put them back into the toy box, he went over and took them out again. He has no problem when I take them away from him though, but he has half growled at Anastasia several times when she came near them. However he ignores her pretty much otherwise. And when I hold Anastasia in my lap and then pick up one of Jake's toys and place it next to Anastasia, Jake would stare at us, but he's okay with it. Just not when Anastasia's sniffing the toys by herself. |

| Janet and her Springer Bonnie came for a visit on Saturday morning. They sniffed each other, but didn't really play together. | ||||||||||
| Yesterday early afternoon, it was cloudy and not so hot, so I took Jake to Kiesel Park, our local "dog park" (not fenced in, just a big regular park that allows well behaved dogs to run leash free). There were no other dogs there, except a dog that looked like a Husky/Wolf mix in the parking lot who was getting ready to leave. Jake was so happy at the park; his tail never stopped wagging. I let him off leash when we got on the walking trail, away from the road. He disappeared into the bushes several times, but every few seconds, he would come back see if I was still around, and he would come to me when I told him to, most of the time. When I put his leash back on, I left the Gentle Leader on, but clipped the leash on his regular collar, he pulled badly again. So I put the leash back on the Gentle Leader. However, he is doing Sit Down Stay very well even outside, but we haven't tested him with distraction yet. As of right now, I don't think he would listen to me if he sees a squirrel. He's going into his crate less and less now. I'm going to try leaving him in the bedroom with the crate door open starting Monday. The story I got from Kathy about Jake is that the woman had found Jake (as a stray?), and she had him for two months. When she realized Jakes potty trained, she brought Jake indoors. Somehow she forgot that her female Border Collie wasnt spayed, and Jake made her dog pregnant. And she made Jake live outside again. The female Border Collie had puppies, but the woman gave the puppies away. And also she told Kathy that Jake didnt get along with her intact male Border Collie, and that he would climb out of her chain link fence, but her neighbor had told her that he would shoot her dogs if they got out. So on Wednesday afternoon, June 22, at 1 PM, the woman called Kathy and told her that she has Jake now in her office, and if somebody from ESRA doesnt pick up Jake from her by 4 PM that day, shes going to take Jake to the local animal shelter, and they would likely euthanize him on the spot, because they have high euthanasia rate, and Jake wouldnt require any hold time, because hes not a stray. However, when I emailed Ed to find out more about Jakes past, Ed said that the woman told him that she got him from a hunter who wasnt able to train Jake into a proper hunting dog. The woman also told him that Jake is very aggressive with her male dog (which none of the ESRA volunteers who had contact with Jake found that to be true). I had a feeling that Jake was trained as a hunting dog, because some of the commands he knows, and he has a lot of fieldie characteristics. So I guess my instinct is correct about Jake having been trained as a hunting dog. Saturday, July 9, 2005 I found two worms in Jake's (solid) poop this morning. The worms were white and flat and about an inch long. So I took the poop in two hours later to the vet. They said they couldn't find the worms, but they did find a flea in it. But to be on the safe side, they recommended and I will go pick up dewormer on Monday. The vet said they sound like tapeworms from my description. While I was at the vet's, I left Jake in the bedroom with the crate door open, and Anastasia was sleeping on my computer desk in there too. Yesterday Jake scratched the crate when I was at school, so I think he doesn't like to be crated when I'm at school anymore. He did fine for 30 minutes in the bedroom while I was away. |

| Both dogs got a lot of treats. Janet said Jake walks around like a bird (hunting) dog (I guess the posture), but she said he's very sweet too. Jake just snuggled against Janet and even wanted to sit in her lap several times. Jake also jumped on Janet twice when they first came in, but he didn't do it after that. | ||||||||||
