I had a blueberry muffin and another one I think it's grape (?). They are delicious. Then we went out for a walk. John picked up the leash and Jake got excited. Then he told Jake to sit (by the door) and let Kate and I walk through first, then told Jake okay. There's a big wooded area across the street, and Jake loves to explore in there everyday (off leash). |

John said that when they took Jake to the vet, the vet said it's great that they keep Jake's nails trimmed. They said that actually they've never really had to trim his nails, and that they are kept short pretty much by all the walking and ball playing he gets everyday. John said that compared to two years ago, Jake is much better both on and off leash while on walks. |

When Jake's exploring in the woods, every 1 or 2 minutes, he would check in visually with John, and periodically, John would call him over and give him a pet and tell him good boy, and release him again. |

When I was there, the first two times John called Jake, he would come over and check in with him. But later he found something in one of the tree trunks and his tail was rotating so fast like a propeller, and when John called him, Jake ignored him. |

We then started walking, and Jake stayed in the wooded area across the street but followed us in the forward direction also. |

John still uses the stand like a tree technique with Jake whenever Jake does not stop pulling, which was every 20 seconds or so yesterday. John said that usually they are able to walk further distance before he has to stop, but they've noticed that when Kate walks with them and they talk while walking, Jake tends to pull more, like he wants people to pay attention to him instead or knows he can get away when people aren't paying attention to him. I have no doubt that they have to stop even more frequently today because I was there, I think Jake knows there is no way his parents would discipline him with me there. |

Eventually Jake came and John put the leash on him to continue with the walk. The leather leash they are using is unique, I've never seen it at any of the stores. It's not the typical 4 or 6 foot length, but I think it's a little longer and made of two thinner strands instead of one thick strand, so that it's loop tied about 1 foot from the hook, to create another handle. John later said that he got it from a friend who is a GSD confirmation show judge and the only American who is certified to judge GSD's in Germany. During the leashed walk, Jake was definitely better than 2 years ago. John said that Jake no longer jerks, but would walk slowly or back up whenever there is slight tension (which was what I observed yesterday also). However, John said that Jake never seemed to learn the length of the leash, because he would still walk to the end of the leash repeatedly, then slow down, stop, or back up, when he realized the leash is taut.
