| I had told Kathy and Heather that I would need at least two-week period after Brenna got adopted, to wait to make sure her new family would keep her, and for me to reflect on my time with her. I got Brenna the day Lexi got adopted, and I didnt have any time to reflect on my time with Lexi. Especially having to take care of a new foster dog, I quickly realized that I would need some time off fostering after Brenna got adopted. Besides, I really needed to work on my grant proposal for my general preliminary exam for my graduate degree. Finally three weeks after Brennas adoption, I emailed Heather to say that Im ready for another foster dog. At first Heather said theres a dog who was found as a stray by a woman in Birmingham for foster care, but after Millie talked to that woman, the founder of the dog decided to foster the dog herself. I guess she had gotten attached to the dog and would like to have some say in his adopter. In the next few days, Kathy continued to send out emails to the MidSouth Yahoo Group that they need more foster homes, including for a dog called Jeremy, in Durham, North Carolina. So I emailed Kathy to say that I could foster a dog. On Friday, June 24, 2005, Kathy emailed back to say that Jeremy didnt really seem cat friendly, but theres another dog, Jake, in Hickory, also in North Carolina, who had no reaction to the cat in the vet office, but he would need learn some basic obedience. Then Heather emailed to say that Leslie from Atlanta is driving home from North Carolina where her parents live, and she is willing to drive both Jeremy and Jake to Atlanta on Sunday. Jeremy would be fostered in Birmingham by Patty. I told her that Im willing to drive to Atlanta to get Jake, and the plan is for Heather to drive Jeremy from Atlanta to Birmingham to Patty. The ESRA volunteer who evaluated Jake is Ed, but he had to leave town for vacation on Saturday, and the vet office is closed on Saturday afternoon and Sunday. So Kathy got another ESRA volunteer, Ron in North Carolina, to foster Jake for one night at his house. | ||||||||||||

| When Jake and Jeremy were in my car (Jeremy in front because he's the more quiet one), when the boys touched nose to nose twice, both times Jeremy growled at Jake, and Jake did not respond. They both slept the whole way for five hours as we drove to meet Patty in Montgomery (two of those hours we were "parking" on I-85 near the Atlanta airport, we went 15 miles in those two hours because of construction). I found three fleas on Jeremy, and he seems to have an infection on his left eye. I had the doggie lunch pail that Janet gave me, and I gave Jeremy some water, but he wouldn't drink any, but Jake drank all of it. We met Patty and her husband, David, in Montgomery at 8 PM. Jeremy warmed up to them immediately. Glad that they were able to take Jeremy last night. Two new fosters in my apartment is a little too much. Picture of Jake in my car. |

| As I was driving to Atlanta on Sunday morning, I got a call from Heather saying that her dog Chloe had swollen eye and shes not able to transport Jeremy to Birmingham today, so she asked me if I could take Jeremy back to Auburn also, then on Monday I could meet Patty to transport Jeremy to her. Patty couldnt drive to Atlanta because she had to go to a wedding that afternoon. I told Heather that since its only 24 hours, I think it would be okay. However, the more I thought about it, the more I didnt think I have the facility (only one crate and one cat) to house two new foster dogs (not sure if they are potty trained). So I called Heather, who gave me Pattys phone number, so I could call Patty to ask her if its okay if I just drive both dogs from Atlanta to Montgomery and transport Jeremy to her on Sunday night. Patty agreed. I got to Leslies house around 3:30 PM. Leslie said the boys snapped at each other in the car, so they had to separate them (Leslie was traveling with her son, Miles). Before I got to Leslie's house, her husband, David, had taken Jake on a long walk to wear him out, as they think he's very energetic. David was giving Jake an obedience lesson as I was pulling their driveway. He said Jake is very smart. Jeremy was a little skittish, but warms up after a couple minutes. Leslie said they fed Jeremy about half cup of dog food, but Jake wouldn't eat any. We did let the boys meet again on Leslie's front lawn, and they were fine. I also got to meet Leslie's two Springer boys; they are big and friendly. This picture was taken by Leslies family. | ||||||||||||

| When Jake and I got back to my apartment, he didn't pay any attention to Anastasia. I didn't know if he's housetrained, so I had him leashed as I was getting him dinner. Before I knew it, he lifted his leg and peed on the cat tree. So into the crate he went. He seems to be crate trained too, as he went in there by himself with no resistance. For dinner, he ate one and half can of wet, and half cup of dry. He also had a handful of dog cookies after dinner. | ||||||||||||

| After bath, I was getting his ear cleaning supply, and he marked the bedroom door frame. When I yelled at him "No!" as he was peeing on the door frame, he made this half growl. He slept through the night with no barking or whining in the crate. | ||||||||||||
| Then I decided to groom him. When Leslie and I spoke on the phone on Sunday morning as she was driving down from NC, she said Jake smelled pretty badly. But when I got him, neither he nor Jeremy smelled at all, but they both did look pretty dirty. So around 10 PM I groomed Jake. He's fine with the electric clipper, but he really doesn't like anything to touch his face. So I just start with his neck and then ears and then before he knew it, I was shaving his face. He was okay in the bathtub. He did try to jump out a couple times, but he was overall good. I didn't blow dry him because his fur is pretty much chopped off short, and he has slightly coarse hair, so it should dry off pretty fast. I cleaned his eyes, which he did not like at all, but he was fine with the ear cleaning and the teeth brushing, after I figured out how to do it without touching his face. He does let me kiss his face, just doesn't like it when my hands touch it. | ||||||||||||
