Petco Howl-o-ween Pet Costume Contest
On Saturday, October 30, 2004, Mercy and I went to Petco for their costume contest.  Originally I had planned to take both Mercy and Anastasia there (Anastasia doesn't have a costume, but I thought she would enjoy watching other animals), but we walked around campus for 45 minutes before we went to Petco to tire Mercy out, so she wouldn't be so hyper around other dogs.  Well, I got so tired myself after the walk, we had to stop by the apartment to drop off Anastasia before going to Petco.  I just didn't think I could carry her around for another hour.
Mercy is dressed up as Super Dog.  I got this shirt for Penelope last year.  I didn't think Mercy would win the contest with this shirt, but I thought it would be fun to come anyways, and Mercy would get to meet a lot of dogs.  On the Today show it says this year the Superman costume is most popular for pets, and I guess this is a tribute to Christopher Reeve.  Mercy was the only pet who wore superhero costume at Petco.  Everybody thought the "Super Dog" is so cute and she has no problem letting several people (both adults and children) pet her.
There were four dogs wearing Bumble Bee costumes at the contest, and Mercy barked at two of them.  One of them was this Malamute.  The Bee (Kodiak) started whining when he saw Mercy, so Mercy barked back (not vicious bark) as if she was saying, "Hey what's up."  But Mercy growled at another Bumble Bee (I think the dog was a Basenji mix) and barked at him when the dog licked Mercy's nose.  But when they walked right past each other twice later, she didn't bark at him.  There were about 15 dogs there, and Mercy was very good around them.
Two toy size dogs dressed up as Bride and Groom, and their owners dressed up as mothers of the newly wed couple.
A ferret dressed up a Dracula.  There's a little boy who dressed himself and his gerbil up vampires.
A kitten dressed up as a little witch.
Princess dog.
A girl dressed up as a cowgirl and her "miniature horse" won the contest.  The dog has a miniature saddle and brindle, and even a blanket padding under the saddle.  When we were waiting to be called to go in front of the judge, Mercy did "Sit", "Down" and "Stay" very well, even though there were a lot of people and dogs around.  But she did get a little hesitant when we had to walked pass through a group of dogs to get to the judge's table.  However she came with me to the judges after I reassured her.
All contest participants got a goody bag.  Inside Mercy's bag is a fleece Ghost toy with squeaker in it, and a Halloween bandanna.  The ghost toy has become Mercy's new favorite toy, now that she made a hole in the duck toy, so it wouldn't make the duck noise anymore when she bites on it.
