HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Seattle's film critics have tapped Far From Heaven as best picture of the year, with the 1950s drama earning honors in five other categories, including director (Todd Haynes) and actress (Julianne Moore).
They also created a special annual category, the Living Legend award, to salute a "movie notable deserving of career recognition." This year's award goes to actress Maureen O'Hara.
The inaugural awards were organized by Seattle's Parallax View: A Film Society, a group of film enthusiasts, professionals, and critics. The members did not vote on the awards, however; a Parallax committee polled the area's critics.
Other winners: actor, Daniel Day-Lewis, Gangs of New York; supporting actress, Bebe Neuwirth, Tadpole; supporting actor, Chris Cooper, Adaptation; original screenplay, Todd Haynes, Far From Heaven; adapted screenplay, David Hare, The Hours.
Also: documentary, The Kid Stays in the Picture; foreign- language film, Y tu mama tambien; cinematography, Edward Lachman, Far From Heaven; music, Elmer Bernstein, Far From Heaven; editing, Bill Pankow, Femme Fatale; and production design, Dante Ferretti, Gangs of New York.
